Elevation not working

IOS:

Flying on the big island of Hawaii, took off at alt. 38ft. and climbed to just under 6,000 ft. and crashed into a hill well before reaching a mountain in the distance. I can send a replay but I don’t remember how to do that.

Please note that the altitude on auto pilot is altitude above sea level and not altitude above ground or airport level. Hawaii has some tall peaks so I my guess is that you weren’t flying high enough. Do you happen to know the altitude that you crashed into terrain in terms of sea level? Currently your hud shows msl. If you go to the button of your screen there is a way to show agl.

The Infinite Flight autopilot uses exclusively absolute altitude. As said above by @Aviation_Alex, certain regions of the game can have some pretty tall peaks, perhaps passing 6.000 feet. If you would like to avoid a similar crash you should keep an eye out for your relative altitude.

Hi. I’ve always found I’ve been free of mountains in the distance if the FPV is clear (higher than) any visible mountains (assuming my climb rate will always take me above any mountains too far in the distance to be seen).

Do you recall if the FPV was above all distant mountains?

Thanks. I’ve flown this area before without this happening. I’ll try again tomorrow.

Bob

Sorry, FPV?

FPV or flight path vector is the little circle in your HUD view. It shows the direction you are travelling (ignore the turn in this screenshot). So, if you have everything set (power and vertical speed, and your forward speed is stable), if that circle is above the mountain in the distance, you will arrive above that mountain in the location the FPV showed.

Of course it doesn’t help in low visibility.

It usually stands for first person view/flight path vectoring. Either of them work, to use them get on a forward facing camera such as HUD or pilot cams, and make a visual evaluation of what’s ahead.

Thanks. I do always use HUD. I didn’t know that aiming the circle above a mountain will assure sufficient altitude to fly above it. Good to know and I appreciate the tip.

I looked up the typography of the big island and it looks like where I was flying has a higher elevation than I thought. I was flying the caravan at a climb rate of 1,000 ft. per mile and never seemed to visually get higher off the ground. I guess that’s why.

Thanks for responding.
