I’ve been trying to look it up on google as to why flaps on the E175 come out during pushback. Maybe I’m overthinking it or overseeing it. I feel like majority of the time I fly on other aircrafts the flaps come out after pushback and after engine start.
I can’t speak for the E175, but I can say that the flaps coming down during pushback isn’t an aircraft-specific thing. If engines are started before the pushback is over (which is rare), the flaps can be lowered during the pushback.
The flaps on the E-jets are electrically controlled and aren’t relied on hydraulics being in use like Airbus jets. Therefore the flaps can be lowered at anytime as long as there is adequate battery power. For example, it’s standard operating procedure that pilots at SkyWest lower the flaps right when push starts.
yoo, ive actually been wondering about this. So i generally start my one engine during the pusback process, geenrally when im further from the gate cause i thought thats how piolots do it but do they actually start the engines after pushback nad if you know(cause i get a lot of mixed answers online)why?
This may change based on the country you’re in, but I can say here in the US we start our engines on pushback 95% of the time. When the ground crew gives us “clear to start” we begin starting, and that usually happens just after pushback begins.
It is more efficient if we can have the engines started by the time pushback is complete. The only time we don’t start the engines during pushback is when our APU is inoperative and we need to perform a cross-bleed start. This requires increasing the engine thrust, so we would not want to do that while we are hooked up to the tug.
I meant active and stable before pushback is over, not initiating. Sorry. To reiterate, if the engines are running and avail before pushback is over, flaps can end up being set depending on SOP.
