Downwinds

So I was doing touch and goes and remaining in the pattern at KLAS and I was given the instruction “Continue right downwind runway 8R” or something like that. The image below is what I did. I followed the white arrow. Which is right downwind of 8R? Is that correct? Just for an example so I can clearly understand it, I have put a red arrow on the image. If I fly that red arrow, does that mean I am flying right downwind of 26R?

You did a right downwind. Your fine.

Right downwind would be the white arrow turned around 180 degrees. For reference right traffic is right hand turns and left traffic is left hand turns

If you’re flying left downwind the runway will be on your left and right downwind on your right.

Hi there,

Firstly, have a look at the chart below:

The chart shows all the legs of the pattern:

  • 449EA2A0-0A38-43A7-8A09-581C43A77CC1

  • The white arrow in your screenshot is a Left downwind for rwy 26L as the aerodrome is on your left hand side if you look out the cockpit and you’re flying to the 26L end of the runway, not right downwind for 8R.

See the screenshot below:

The green arrow I’ve created here is on the right downwind for 08R leg because if you look outside your cockpit window, the aerodrome will be on your right hand side and you are flying to the 08R end of the runway :

Regarding the red arrow,

  • The red arrow is on the left downwind leg for 08L as the aerodrome is on your left hand side if you look out of your cockpit and you are flying towards the 08L end of the runway.

See the screenshot below:

The aqua arrow I’ve created here is on the right downwind for 26R leg because if you look outside your cockpit window, the aerodrome will be on your right hand side and you are flying to the 26R end of the runway:

Isn’t it the other way around? Left downwind and the runway is on your right?

No,

  • Right downwind means the aerodrome would be on your right hand side if you look out of your cockpit

  • Left downwind means the aerodrome would be on your left hand side if you look out of your cockpit.

Nope, you are on left downwind when the runway is to the left of you and your flying towards leftbase for the assgined runway

No it’s simple as it sounds

Left downwind and runways on left

Right downwind runways on right

For left downwind you will make left base, for right downwind you will make right base

If you are on left downwind, runway should be left side from your perspective :)

Okay. So for the screenshot below, if I fly the blue arrow, does that mean I’m flying right downwind for 1L. Or is that right downwind for 19R?image

Okay thank you

  • The blue arrow leg means you are on right downwind for 19R as you are flying towards the 19R end of the rwy and the aerodrome is on your right hand side.

Okay. So basically. It’s the runway that I am flying towards is the active runway? Or is the the runway I’m flying from?

No problem. If you have any questions, feel free to ask via DM 🙂

Ok, so, if you’re doing pattern work it’ll be the runway you took off from, unless the ATC gives you a rwy change etc

Let’s say your doing some pattern work on 26L -

  • ATC Clears you for takeoff with the following instructions:

-VH-QJX Cleared for takeoff 26L, Make left traffic

  1. You would then takeoff, fly upwind for around 10 seconds or so,

  2. Then you’d turn onto a left crosswind.

  3. Then you’d turn onto a left downwind and start flying parallel to the runway with the aerodrome on your left hand side.

  4. Then you’d turn onto a left base after you think you have enough distance from the aerodrome to produce a long enough final that you’d think would produce a stable approach to the rwy.

  5. Then you’d turn onto a final (line up with the runway)

Here’s the diagram that show’s most of the traffic legs I’ve listed:

449EA2A0-0A38-43A7-8A09-581C43A77CC1

  • In simple terms, your basically doing a loop back to the runway you took off from to do some touch and goes, low passes, or just landing etc etc :).

I’m confused now 😂😂😂

🤣🤣🤣I am too kinda. Kinda scared to fly on expert server now since I don’t wanna get ghosted

Okay. So just to clarify, if I was to fly the yellow arrow in the image below, I would be flying the right downwind for runway 1R?image

That is 100% correct, nice work!
