Do you use Nav2, how often, and what are you using it for?

I have to admit, I have hardly used Nav2 at all. Mostly because it’s just too easy to always go GPS–>ILS.

I changed that the other day, and found it a new (rediscovered?) thrill to vector my autopilot with reference to VOR radials, while keeping Nav1 ready with the ILS.

I was wondering about whether and how others are using it?

Never used it because I don’t want to learn how lol

Here is a more in-depth explanation on what nav2 is: What is NAV 2 and ADF 1 used for in IF? [Answered] - #2 by Balloonchaser

Just put something like a VOR frequency into Nav2.

Then when you select Nav2 as the active Nav, use the crs2 to dial in the course you want to follow from or to that station’s location.

It’s very cool to assign your AP course vectors to automatically track from that point.

And then watch the turns to automatically seek and intercept that inbound or outbound course.

It’s like a new power of control over your movement in horizontal space.

I don’t really use it at all. Never had a reason to not just go GPS → ILS like you said.

I tend to tune a VOR to NAV2 - helps with departures/arrivals that use them.

I barely use NAV2 unless for some reason I am aligned on a runway on approach and I need to switch runways then I’ll use NAV2. Also if I go around and ATC tells me to go to a different runway.

It’s too over complicated lol

I was wondering what you meant by over complicated. I had some confusion as well with using Nav2, for a couple reasons.

Have you maybe encountered this as well?:

1)without at least one waypoint set (it doesn’t matter to where), LNAV doesn’t light up, so you can’t navigate the Nav2 without some random waypoint set. And LNAV will dissapear again after you clear your waypoints, even if Nav2 is still set.

2)you can’t set an ILS to NAV2

I use both navs when I fly vor, or dme approaches. I like to see when i cross intersecting radials so I can be more precise.

I’m pretty sure you can. Say for instance you need to switch runways and align with the ILS, you can use NAV 2 to activate the ILS for the new runway you’re about to land on.

In the RWYS menu of an airport, the set NAV 2 button isn’t funcional for an ILS. So if you wanted to switch, you would have to go into the map and change your NAV1 manually.

Non-rnav Sid/stars

I’ve never been able to do that. Can you test that and tell me if it works for you or not, to see if I’m missing something.

edit: But, orienting with the runway doesn’t affect the ability to tune the ILS. You don’t even need to be on the same side of the earth to set an ILS frequency into NAV1. No matter what you do, you can’t tune an ILS into NAV2, is that not correct?

What I said above isn’t always true either, after testing.

It turns out I was wrong. I tried it at LHR before flying off to Tokyo. The NAV 2 button stays greyed off meaning it’s not able to connect to ILS.
