Do fireworks pose a risk for planes?

With it being US Independence Day tomorrow I thought this would be a good time to ask this are fireworks bad for planes?

I guess it depends how low the plane is and how high the fireworks are, but I could just be stupid

Well yes they are very hot and they shoot high up into the sky posing a threat to surrounding air traffic especially in crowded airspaces
That’s why firemen can only use the big ones in the shows because they comply with the airspace danger and they probably know how to use them better

Fireworks normally shoot up to about 300 feet in the air (at a maximum). With the exception of landing/takeoff, VFR aircraft are not supposed to fly below 1,000 feet AGL over a congested/populated area, and 500 feet over an open area (such as water). So no, unless the fireworks are being set off near an airport (which they won’t be), then everything is fine.

Hope this helps!

They make a restricted airspace for big events

Thanks. Thanks.

That is only if necessary, but chances are this won’t happen. Fireworks are not detonated near enough to any airfield for them to be a factor.

They can specially for helicopters since they fly low, if they’re being fired illegally and a helicopter flies over it could hit them. Typically pilots are aware of fire work shows as long as everyone is smart and plays by the rules life is fine and good!

Where I live they just create restricted airspace 1 or 2 miles away from they fire works and 2000 ft high above it. In Phoenix Arizona there are airports everywhere and they lauch fire works in the city.

They don’t pose a threat in the practical world. In theory anything that shoots up and explodes does, but the big display ones only explode about 500 feet up, maby a bit more, but outside of approach and departure when are aircraft below 5k? There are plenty of safeguards put in place I’m sure, so while they do pose a hypothetical threat you don’t have to worry… 😁

Much more important to make sure you keep your self safe if you plan to set off some on your own…

Yes they do, but not in some cases. Here’s a good thread on Quora telling you about the dangers of pyrotechnics and aeronautics. 👇

Back when AirTran was a thing I was flying from Orlando to Atlanta and I could see the Disney World Fireworks from the air. It was pretty neat.

Sure they do, if you go out of your way to pose a risk.

Everything which is under controlled circumstances does not pose a risk for aircraft. I’m sure there are some exceptions where an aicraft might’ve nearly missed a firework, but those are exceptions. It’s like saying, does a pen pose a risk to an aircraft? Well, no unless I go and stab the pilot in the back and hijack it. Anything could technically pose a risk.

Around a hospital yes they pose a huge risk to Medevac helicopters landing at them especially in my area with one landing every 2 hours
