Direction of wind arrows in HUD and status bar disagree

I’ve seen the wind arrows disagree by up to 35-45 degrees… I see a prior topic in 2021 that got zero responses.

Anyone have any ideas?

Not immediately, but I can describe the latest scenario:

B738. Simbrief flight plan was KBOS - EGLL, using NATV…
As I was enroute from the end of LOBST5 SID to the start of NATV, the wind aloft was slowly shifting from 180 to 275, about a degree per minute.
The wind arrow in the HUD was showing accurate wind bearing for the entire flight.
The wind arrow in the status bar was the same when the wind was 180ish, but never ‘kept up’ with the HUD wind heading.
Eventually, the status bar wind direction was 40 degrees left of the actual wind.
After the majority of the NATV route, the status bar wind ‘caught up’ to the actual 300ish wind direction.
I was at FL330 for the start of this, with a short stretch at FL350 over the Irish Sea.

Presumably it is the difference between reporting wind relative to true vs magnetic north:

Boston Logan (KBOS)
Magnetic variation: ~15° west

If the wind direction is given relative to true north, its magnetic equivalent will be 15° less.
If the wind direction is given relative to magnetic north, its true equivalent will be 15° more.

London Heathrow (EGLL)
Magnetic variation: ~0.52° east

If the wind direction is given relative to true north, its magnetic equivalent will be 0.52° more.
If the wind direction is given relative to magnetic north, its true equivalent will be 0.52° less.

Locations with some of the highest magnetic variations on Earth:

Southern Tip of New Zealand – Magnetic variation can reach ~26° east.
South-Eastern Tip of Africa – Magnetic variation can be ~30° west.
Northern Canada (Near Magnetic North Pole) – Magnetic variation can exceed 40°.
Antarctica (Near Magnetic South Pole) – Extreme variations occur due to proximity to the pole.
South Atlantic Anomaly Region – Unusual magnetic behavior leads to significant variation.

You’re mentioning “wind barb”, but the op is mentioning status “bar” vs HUD?

That is so right. My bad, I misread his second post.

That would seem to account for about half of the difference that i saw.

If the status bar Wind was trying to show true heading, I still have a feeling at this point, that there might still be some error in the displayed value.

I’ll probably have to fly the route again, use the declination chart, and see if there’s an unaccounted residual difference.

Very good reminder just how oddball the declination lines can get!

Yes, exactly those. Over New Brunswick, the status bar arrow diverged to the left. By Ireland, it was back to normal, as best I can remember.

That’s exactly what I mean. It was severe (45 degrees or so) for the over Canada portion of that KBOS-EGLL.

What if Winds on the Status Bar is deselected and reselected?
Does the arrow correct itself or is it still off?

Do the arrows have the same increments coded or is one finer than the other?

They should be exactly the same.

If I unselect/reselect the status bar Winds, they show the same heading difference afterward.

Metier: both arrows data precision is: 1 degree, 1 knot.

Jan: I agree, I would expect them to be identical. And the magnetic variation chart shows less variation than the status bar arrow deflected, by about half of what the arrow actually indicated.

I’m at a loss.

I still haven’t encountered this issue myself.

Try spawning at NZIR in Antarctica. I get the arrows pointing in something approaching opposite directions.
