what is the difference between a sid and a star?
SIDS are for departures, while STARs are for arrivals.

A waypoint is a single location which you can input into your flight plan. SIDS and STARs are groups of waypoints to get you into/out of the airport.

oh ok so if i choose the ATC preferred sid then i can put in my own plan by using the waypoints and then use a star.
Inputting a SID/STAR is a faster way to input the single waypoints, as well as altitudes.

A waypoint is just a point at a specific location.
SIDS and STARS are sort of routes made up of waypoints together helping with traffic flow.
