Descent Formula

What is the formula to calculate decent again? I forgot…

  1. Take your current altitude: 5500′

  2. Subtract 1500′ for the traffic pattern altitude

  3. Multiply it by 3 this is for lower altitudes around 24000 ft but the same really applys :)

So many variables. Depends on speed, alt, winds, rate of descent etc. Sadly there is no exact formula, but a good rule of thumb is to take your current altitude, take away the airport elevation (i.e. converting altitude to ‘height’) then multiply that by three to find the approximate distance. Unfortunately a lot of it comes down to experience.
Hope that helps.

It’s like airport altitude + 3000 divided by VS?
Something like that…

I don’t usually use a formula to descend. I start my decent about 20 minuets from the destination. And I slow a little bit. Then I just change the vertical speed and altitude until I get it where I want it.

I have always divided my altitude by the ETE. Works everytime :).
