For me it depends on what plane I’m flying. With the slippery ones like the a350,777,and 787 I start my decent 170nm out with a vs of -1200 so that I don’t loose my speed. With the a320 I start at 130nm with a vs of -1500.
Lol, that’s basically exactly what I do!
There is a line along your FPL that indicates where you will reach your target alt based on your descent rate input on your autopilot. Just go to map and you can see.
Usually -1400, increases to -1700 during 15K-10K Alt. MSL.
Your nose will not tilt downwards if your speed is sufficiently low.
I normally descend 150nm out at -1500 but sometimes increase to -1700 if necessary
