“Descend to Pattern Altitude”

Hi! I am seeking the definition of “Descend to Pattern Altitude.” I was just told the following but I don’t know what it means. Can someone elaborate? Thanks

The pattern altitude is 1000 ft. AAL (above airport level) for GA aircraft, and 1500 ft. AAL for commercial aircraft.

Usually controllers give you this command if you are too high to land.
