Denver - Munich Innagural A380 flight Trip Report

Hello amazin IFC’er’s :waving_hand:! Today, Lufthansa innagurated the first A380-800 service from Denver Colorado to Munich, Germany :germany:, and somehow I was able to book a buisness class seat before they filled up! The entire pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight expirance was nothing short of exceptional, and easily made it into my top 5 aviation expirances ! I hope you enjoy reading the trip report as much as I enjoyed writing it !!

My day started very early ; first alarm went off at 3:45 and as per usual I snoozed that, and woke up to the second one at 4:00. My parents drove me out to the airport where I caught UA1378 from Jackson to Denver on Uniteds’ special A320 “FriendShip”:snow_capped_mountain:! The flight was uneventful except for me eating like 10 stroopwaffles but thats not important information for the trip report :face_savoring_food::face_with_peeking_eye:.
We landed around 8:25 and parked at B12 right next to a 757 that was loading up for its flight to Boston!! Seeing that glorious :pencil: put an ear to ear grin on my face, which got even bigger when i realized it was Evo !! Anywho, due to my next flight being an international one, I had to go to baggage claim, recheck my suitcase, and go through international security. I snagged this lovely photo :backhand_index_pointing_up: as I was going over DIA’s infamous bridge! If my memory serves me correct, WestJet was heading to Calgary :canada: whilst Aeromexico was heading down to Guadalajara :mexico:; both places I want to visit soooo badly its not even funny.
Given I had 2.5 hrs till boarding started, I did the only 2 logical things… #1 go get a maple bacon donut from Voodoo and #2 go to the United lounge :doughnut:!

I got to the gate around :three::zero: minutes before boarding started, and as per every innagural flight it was a freaking party! There was an lufthansa A380 cake :birthday_cake:, cupcakes with the US flag :united_states:, Germany flag :germany: and ones with mini DIA tents ! There was also a band playing traditional German music, the CEO’s of Lufthansa and Denver Int’l doing interviews with local news agencies :video_camera: and the crew taking pictures with passengers! It was a vibe and a half!
For this flight, boarding was quite unique. The gate that will eventually serve the A380 (A41W) was under construction :building_construction:, with new pavement being added to hold the nearly 611,000 lbs (560,000 kg) aircraft. Due to this, they took us in 50 seat buses :bus: to the aircraft which was parked at a remote stand on the north side of C Concourse! This was the stunning sight I saw when stepping off the bus and omg i was speechless :heart_eyes:

After boarding, one of my old friends from highschool texted me saying he was on the flight down in the front economy cabin! As quiet and least suspisious as possible, I snuck down to say hi :waving_hand: and snagged this beautiful picture of lufthansa’s Trent 900 engines ! Right then and there the flaps were set to 3 and we started taxiing! For all the avgeeks out there, the sound of A380 flap tracks is glorious :musical_notes::musical_note: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:!!
When I got back to my seat, one of the first class flight attendents came around offering Champage :bottle_with_popping_cork:, Orange juice , coffe :hot_beverage: or water! Given I’m 19 yes thats what I am IRL, and we were heading to Germany where drinking is legal by 18, I decided to try the champage. Yea… so… um, I hated it :face_vomiting:. I tried one sip and right away asked for an OJ; the FA graciously gave me one. Right after, the captain came over the intercom saying “Flight attendents please be seated for departure”.

We turned onto 34L and immediately the engines started screaming, doing what they do best - producing over 84,000 pounds of thrust to get the A380 airborne!! Despite Denver airport being 5,430 ft msl, our plane used about 10,000 of the 16,000 ft available to get off the ground :airplane_departure:! It was a very very slow climb to our initial cruising altitude of FL350 (35,000)!
After takeoff, I got settled in for our amazing 9 hr flight across the pond! At the seat was an amenity kit by German company Sinn which included all the usual goodies :toolbox:, a bottle of water :cup_with_straw:, noise cancelling headphones :headphone:, pajamas, and more bedding than I could have asked for ! In addition to all this, after the boarding door was closed, the first class purser came around passing out a food and a drink menu :scroll:!

The lunch/dinner :fork_and_knife_with_plate: service started about an hour after take off with very very devine smelling hot towel :cherry_blossom: , drinks and Lufthansa’s famous caviar service :face_savoring_food:! For my drink I decided to have a ginger ale :ginger_root: and sparkling water!
For my appetizer it was a nobrainer  - Zucchini Roulade with Bell Pepper Jus and Goat Cheese! :bell_pepper::cucumber::cheese_wedge:, whilst my main course was an Herb crusted Lamb Rack Provençal with Potato and Parsnip Puree, Brussels Sprouts, Baby Carrot and green Bean! I was in literal heaven :face_savoring_food: :face_savoring_food:. During the meal service, the F/A’s were constantly checking on us to see if needed anything which was very kind of them, given how busy and stressful meal services can be. For desert, I decided to keep it simple and have a slice of apple pie :pie: with vanilla ice cream :ice_cream:! By the end of lunch, I was stuffed and ready for a movie, but decided to explore the plane since this was my first time on an A380! At the front of each cabin were small displays of snacks and drinks which was another very nice gesture by the crew  I lost track of time, and probably did 5 laps around the plane on each level for atleast a good 30 minutes ; when I got back to my seat, the purser had made it into a bed :person_in_bed:!
After dinner, I watched the first Dumb and Dumber from 1994 :movie_camera:while enjoying a bag of popcorn , and a few episodes of the officer before I passed out a solid 5 hrs .

I woke up somwhere over northwest germany as we flew over the border with The Netherlands :netherlands: and right before breakfast was served! I was still very full from dinner, and decided to only have a fruit smoothie, a coffee and some scrambled eggs :cooking::hot_beverage:. The flight attendents were very accomadating to my interesting requests and didnt hesitate to get me served! Eventhough it was a small meal, it was amazing!:face_savoring_food:
Afterwards I dozed up for a little bit longer and woke up as we were on descent and turning downwind for 26R, just in time to snap this beautiful picture of Munich airport :mobile_phone:

Due to a wind storm the previous night in Munich and the surrounding area’s, the runways had been closed to clean by Airport Ops, and were still closed when we were on approach. :dashing_away:
Due to this, we had to circle east of the airport for about an hour, but it didn’t bother me considering the IFE system had 5 seasons’ of The Office  and the F/A’s did a snack and drink service.

After circling what I ultimately think was like an hour and half of circling, we came into land on 24R :airplane_arrival: and it was buttery smooth :butter:! We used about 3/4 of the runway; after exiting the runway, I saw another Lufthansa A380 going around (I believe it was LH453 from LAX). It was quite a short taxi over to gate 112 at Terminal 1, and I got off relatively quick despite it being a completely full flight!

I got this perfectionately framed picture of our 2013 built bird  whilst heading to Customs and Immagration :passport_control:. All said and done from disembarking to getting to the curb was like 20 minutes. Note to self, the germans are so efficient , and also very very kind! To add to the good luck, my bag was the first to come off the baggage carousel :white_check_mark::luggage:!!

Right before I got in my taxi to the hotel :hotel::taxi:, I got this beautiful picture of the control tower ! It was a very quick 20 minute drive to the hotel, and I passed out the second I sat down from traveling for nearly a day and a half . All in all, the flight was an easy 10/10, and I would without hesitation travel on lufthansa again! If I remember, I’ll post a trip report for my flight home from Zurich to Denver, so be on the look out for that next week! :switzerland:

is it just me or do these pics not look like the upper deck??

They are. It’s due to the immense wing flex that the a380 has in flight
