Delta Retires The MD-88 and MD-90

Delta has retired the MD-88 and MD-90

The end of an era for the Mad Dog is here.

  • Delta Air Lines has decided to retire its remaining MD-88s and MD-90s in June 2020.
  • The retirement for the MD-88 has been accelerated from December 2020 to six months earlier.
  • There are currently a few MD-88s and MD-90s left in service.

Delta has now flown the final flights for the MD-88/90, on June 2, 2020. Both have special flight numbers.

DL88 from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Atlanta with MD-88
DL90 from Houston-Intercontinental (IAH) to Atlanta with MD-90

Delta is the final MD-90 operator and one of the final MD-80 operators in the U.S. Sad to see these go.

Delta has posted a final farewell video for both aircraft:

The video includes a shot of the stored MD-88/90s.

Wow, that’s incredibly sad. I was hoping to go on the final flight but now I’m not sure if I’ll be able to…

Not the MD-80! This can’t be happening! Delta is the last mainline airline in the US that flies the Maddogs, they can’t get rid of them! 😡

First the DC-9, then the MD-80, whose next?

At least the MD-90’s are staying for the moment, and the 717’s as well.

I AM SOOOOOOO STUPID!!!

I literally had the chance to fly this in February but nooooooo, you can’t find the retirement date so you decide to fly the E190 instead. Ugh.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I was scheduled to fly on an MD-88 in the US this summer… Really wanted to fly on it one more time after like 13 years before they retire. Doesn’t seem like this’ll happen anymore 😢

Same boat Marc, currently attempting to locate the final flight on the schedule right now.

Can’t believe the Mad Dogs are leaving so early. Used to see them @ JFK/LGA until those damn noise abatement regulations since 2017.

IM ANGERED

Always wanted to fly one, now I won’t be able to.

I actually have like 7 flights booked already that would’ve sent me on 2 MD-88 flights…

Probably won’t be able to travel to the US this Summer anyway with all the restrictions. But yeah. Fingers crossed for you to make it work!

I’m not sure I’d use the word soon, but ok…

It’s been 40+ years since the first Mad dog was built, and 21 since the last one was built, every mad dog around is old enough to drink, and that’s a pretty good run for a plane… 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well they were going to retire them in August or September of this year I believe. That’s what I meant by soon

That’s still a month accelerated, I’m just not sure I see all the fan fare here, I guess I never liked them much, but it will be a bummer to see them go…

I had it in the post 😔

For me it’s an emotional attachment to it, I’ve managed to fly on around 14 MD-88 flights in my 18 years of living and each one was amazing in its own right. The JT8Ds screaming, then the feeling of being pushed into your seat then rocketing into the air like a fighter jet is something I’ll never forget. It’s such an awesome plane, no other jet could compare to it (besides the DC9). Indeed it will be sad to see it go.
