'curving' the FPL route

does this actually shorten the distance between two points? I noticed a few times that the plane that ‘hops’ is relatively faster than a plane going in a straight line

Its like that because the earth is a sphere

Are you referring to the distance being shorter ?

Yea its actually shorter look it up how

I was always just doing it instinctively :joy: I thought I was wrong

Going direct from airport to airport is the shortest distance. However, those curved routes are usually generated by things like SimBrief to make use of strong tailwinds, avoiding storms or headwinds, avoiding certain airspaces, and following oceanic tracks. So often you will find the curved routes will be faster, but longer by distance.

The curve will only work if it’s on a flat map, but on the sphere type of map the direct will be shorter. Some routes may be curved when put through simbrief because simbrief calculates winds and stuff like that.

I never use simbrief, I calculate winds and use jetstreams myself. but I always arch the route, longer distances would have a bigger arch, shorter flights would have a relatively straighter route

Hallo @German-Invasion do you know what those blue, green, and yellow triangles are?

what? are you talking about the wind flags?

Those are wind barbs, take a look here to see how to use them:

Yes. It’s the first time I see them. They weren’t in the game back in 2024

Thank you
