Cruising through the Idaho backcountry

Last week I decided to do something adventurous :exploding_head:; yes quite literally! I’ve only flown the XCub about a dozen times since I started playing in 2018, and why not, to spruce up my saturaday and end a 45 hour work week right, I decided to do another flight with this cheeky sport plane

For this flight, I decided to fly from McCall at the edge of the Payette National Forest :deciduous_tree::evergreen_tree::wood::deer: across the Frank-Church Wilderness and Craters of the Moon National Monument :full_moon: to Arco! This area of Idaho is know for its winding glacial valleys :national_park: and towering peaks :snow_capped_mountain: that is home to some of the best bush flying in the country! I hope you enjoy this mini trip report and don’t forget to leave a like for my friend Carl who graciously took 3 hours out of his day to humor my schenanigans

Why did the Chicken cross the road?

Because it saw a bison driving a 4-Wheeler on the median and wanted to tame it, and name it Anton.

Actual flight info

Departure Airport: McCall Muni KMYL
Arrival Airport: Arco-Butte County Airport KAOC
Flight Time: 82 minutes
Speed: 110 IAS
Altitude: 12,000 & 14,000

Here’s the beautiful bird that Carl and I will take down to Arco! He’s had this plane for nearly 2 decades, and on this flight it ran perfectly!

Off we go :airplane_departure:!

Flying over the small recreational area of Warm Lake as we reach our initial cruising altitude of 12,000 ft msl! Later on, we climbed up to 14,000 to avoid some taller peaks near Sun Valley!

Middle of absolute nowhere mid-flight with some gorgeous peaks in the back ground!

After a quick snooze, I woke up to this lovely view as we passed through 10,000 on initial descent!

We have Arco in sight!!

Turning a very short downwind to base!
Carl flew the approach pattern swimmingly, and with no issues whatsoever

Bro freaking butteredddddd :butter:

Safely parked at a tie-down, and time to drive back home to Jackson

Since y’all probably don’t believe me about Carl, well… Carl let me take a picture of him, under the condition that I would make him famous on IFC! With that condition, he demanded the picture get 100 likes or else I never get to fly with him again :sob:.

Idaho backcountry flying is a lot of fun McCall and Stanley have summer commuter service while Salmon can be year round all from Boise on Gem Air C208’s!

Thanks :laughing::laughing:
This definitely won’t be the last time I fly GA in the near future!!

Carl??? Carl is doing absolutely fantastic! Especially considering he just got his Multi-Engine pilot certificate!

Yeah, I had always assumed something like: Idaho = potatoes. And then there is the rest of the west. But consider the statement (considering all of North America):

"Idaho might not always top the glossy travel brochures, but among those who’ve seen it firsthand, it’s often considered one of the most underrated scenic gems in the American West. While it may not have the global fame of the Grand Canyon or Banff, Idaho quietly holds its own with a rugged, diverse beauty that surprises many.
