CRS and BRG

What’s the use of these CRS 1, CRS 2, BRG 1 & BRG 2?

In aircraft navigation, CRS1, CRS2, BRG1, and BRG2 are commonly used terms associated with navigation displays, particularly on modern electronic flight instruments or older analog instruments. Here’s what they mean:

  1. CRS1 and CRS2 (Course Select 1 and 2):

    • CRS1 and CRS2 refer to the courses selected for the aircraft’s navigation radios, typically associated with VOR or ILS systems.
    • CRS1 corresponds to the Navigation Radio 1 (NAV1).
    • CRS2 corresponds to the Navigation Radio 2 (NAV2).

What is a “Course”?

•	A course is the intended path the aircraft should follow, typically a radial to or from a navigation aid like a VOR or along an ILS localizer for an approach.
•	Pilots can adjust the CRS knob to set the desired course, which appears on the navigation display or instrument.
  1. BRG1 and BRG2 (Bearing Pointer 1 and 2):

    • BRG1 and BRG2 represent the bearings to navigation aids tuned to NAV1 and NAV2, respectively.
    • A bearing is the direction (relative to the aircraft’s current position) to a navigation aid, expressed in degrees TO the station.

How Bearings are Used:

•	Bearing pointers are often displayed as arrows on a navigation display or horizontal situation indicator (HSI). They point directly to the station (e.g., VOR, NDB, or GPS waypoint).
•	BRG1 and BRG2 show where the navigation aids are relative to the aircraft, which helps with situational awareness and triangulation.

Example Usage in a Flight

1.	CRS1 (NAV1):
•	A pilot flying toward a VOR tunes NAV1 to the VOR frequency and sets CRS1 to the desired inbound radial (e.g., 360°).
•	The course deviation indicator (CDI) will show whether the aircraft is on, left, or right of the selected radial.
2.	BRG1 (NAV1):
•	The BRG1 needle points directly to the VOR station, showing the actual bearing to the station.
3.	CRS2 and BRG2:
•	If NAV2 is tuned to another VOR or navigation aid, CRS2 and BRG2 work the same way for that source.

Practical Applications:

•	CRS1 and CRS2 are used for following specific navigation paths or approaches.
•	BRG1 and BRG2 are used for situational awareness and triangulation, helping pilots determine their position relative to multiple navigation aids.

By understanding and effectively using these functions, pilots can ensure accurate navigation and safe operations in all phases of flight.
