Hi there,
I’ve been enjoying Infinite Flight a lot lately and I usually try to fly as realistically as possible, even when flying on the Training Server. However, I’ve noticed that the crash detection system during landings can be way too sensitive and sometimes unrealistic.
For example, I was flying from Madrid to London in an A350. Everything was going well, and I even went around after a poorly stabilized approach to do things properly. On my second attempt, I landed a bit hard — nothing extreme, just a firm touchdown — and one of my wings barely touched the runway. Instantly: CRASH.
It was super frustrating after a long, well-managed flight.
What’s confusing is that sometimes you can do a rough water landing and the game won’t count it as a crash, but a slightly hard landing on the runway is immediately punished. It would be great if the crash detection could be a bit more forgiving, especially when the landing gear is down and the aircraft is in a normal landing configuration.
A more realistic threshold, or a system that differentiates between true crashes and hard but survivable landings, would really improve the experience.
Thanks for the great work on the sim, and I hope this feedback can help improve it further!
Welcome to the community! It’s amazing to hear that you are partaking in realistic flights and having fun, stuff you will see much of here
We have a community of knowledgeable experts in every category imaginable, so I’m sure someone will build on to what I have to say.
There are multiple factors that go into whether or not it counts as a crash: how fast were you flying? Did you touch down on the runway? It is an interesting thing though: sometimes when you bring an F22 to the ground at Mach 1 nothing happens, but a 737 at 140kts with a rough landing can count as a crash. I’d be curious to see what everyone else thinks!
Well, here’s my take: I only fly a few aircraft in IF, but I know what you’re talking about. I think every aircraft handles differently. For instance, if you flare too hard in the C-17, you’ll crash. If you rotate too quickly in the 747-400, you’ll tail strike and crash.
Overall, I’d say the newer aircraft have pretty good physics, and it’s not incredibly easy to crash them. Obviously, older aircraft are outdated and have poor physics, so it gets easy to accidentally crash.
If you fly realistically like I do, and you learn how each aircraft flies and its quirks, you’ll do just fine.
I usually land between 140 and 150 knots, depending on my weight and my plane, I land well on the runway, I do everything right, but as soon as I land too hard or the wing touches a little, it counts as a crash.
