Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: The Bahamas

Nassau entered Copa Airlines’ route network back in 2011. The capital city of The Bahamas, is a popular destination for beach holidays and also the country’s main economic center. Nassau was first a British settlement, but it will then be disputed by the Spanish several times during armed conflicts. The city also served as a pirate haven during 1703 and 1718 due to the absence of a formal government, this facilitated several pirates to make the Bahamas islands a refuge from the law, until 1718 when the British sought to regain control of the colony.

The Bahamas now is governed by a democratic government cemented on law, and the country offers several touristic attractions and nice resorts to take a moment to chill and relax. Copa Airlines operates at Lynden Pindling International Airport for their flights to Nassau. Places that you can visit at Nassau are:

During the Republican period from 1902 until 1959, Havana experienced a fast economic growth and social development. Things changed with the Cuban Revolution and the rise of Fidel Castro to power, despite the improvements made to the city, the expropriations by the Communist government and the subsequent US embargo, hit financially Havana as well as Cuba overall. The city became much modern during the early 1900s thanks to Marta Abreu de Estévez, a Santa Clara native who promoted numerous projects to revitalize it through philanthropy. Santa Clara was also the place of the last battle of the Cuban Revolution, that toppled the government of Fulgencio Batista and enabled the victory of Castro’s troops and the raise to power of Fidel Castro himself. It’s also the burial site of revolutionary leader Ernesto “Che” Guevara, a prominent figure of the Cuban Revolution. The city is named after the Spanish military captain Francisco García Holguín, one of the men under the command of Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, also a Spanish conquistador and the first colonial governor of Cuba.

Holguín’s economy is based on mechanical industry, automotive workshops and more recently on tourism. It’s also home of Cervecería Bucanero (Buccaneer Brewery), which produces 3 beer brands: Bucanero, Mayabe and Cristal. Jamaica remained a Spanish colony until 1655 with the expedition of Oliver Cromwell, which enabled the British to remove the Spanish out of Jamaica.

Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Sint Maarten

The journey continues to the Franco-Dutch island of Saint Martin, specifically to the capital city of the Dutch side known as Sint Maarten: Philipsburg.

The island itself was first discovered by the Spanish but they didn’t settle there immediately. Around 1630, the Dutch and the French started to settle in the island, and soon fought against the Spanish, whom later abandoned the island completely, soon after the French and the Dutch agreed to share the island and divide it in half, each of them would have their own part. The city of Philipsburg was founded by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch navy. The town soon became an economic hub for international trading.

The island however is famous by its airport: Princess Juliana International Airport and the low approaches pilots have to make while landing, flying over Maho Beach, which is just a few meters next to the airport’s runway. Copa Airlines operates at this airport for their flights to Sint Maarten. Besides the plane spotting at Maho Beach, Sint Maarten has also other places to visit like:
