Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Nicaragua

North of Costa Rica, lies the country of Nicaragua. Its capital city of Managua, is part of Copa Airlines’ network map. Though officially founded as a city in 1846, the efforts to make it the nation’s capital following the independence from Spain started back in 1824. Managua is located between the towns of León and Granada, both fighting to have the status of capital city, the dispute was resolved in 1852 when Managua was named the capital of Nicaragua.

Since then, the city has faced several challenges that affected the development and progress such as natural disasters like the 1972 earthquake and the destructive consequences left behind by the civil war between the 70s and 80s has put Managua on a difficult and desperate situation, but overtime the city became one of the largest in Central America and an important economic hub of Nicaragua. Today, Nicaragua is submerged in a political and social crisis under the Ortega regime, limiting, violating human and constitutional rights and suppressing the opposition.

Copa Airlines operates at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport.

Places to visit in Managua:

  • Puerto Salvador Allende
  • Old Cathedral of Managua
  • Rubén Darío National Theater
  • Revolution Plaza
  • The National Palace of Culture of Managua

Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Honduras

Continuing up north of Nicaragua, we find Honduras. Copa Airlines flies to 2 cities in Honduras: Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.

The city of Tegucigalpa is located on mountainous terrain and between valleys and it’s part of the Tegucigalpa-Comayagüela metropolitan area, one of the largest in Central America. Tegucigalpa is the seat of the government of Honduras and also the economic center of the country. In recent decades, the demographics of the city has changed, and due to lack of urban planning, it has been difficult to keep up with the infrastructure, and like many other cities in the region, socioeconomic problems like violence and poverty have become a challenge. Despite this, Tegucigalpa continues on to solve these issues and to become a top destination for those wanting to learn about the country’s culture, history and to enjoy the attractions they have to offer.

San Pedro Sula is the industrial hub of Honduras, some manufacturing activities include pharmaceutical products, soft drinks, beer, textile, cotton, cosmetic products, soap, paint among others. Unlike Tegucigalpa, which is located on mountainous terrain, San Pedro Sula is closer to the coast and the terrain is mostly plain. But the city still has its share of culture with a good variety of museums, historical sites an of shopping centers.

Copa Airlines flies to Comayagua International Airport (for Tegucigalpa) and Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (for San Pedro Sula). Copa Airlines previously operated at Toncontín International Airport, before all commercial flights were moved to the new Comayagua Airport.

What to visit in Tegucigalpa:

  • El Picacho Park
  • Parque Nacional La Tigra
  • Museo para la Identidad Nacional
  • City Mall Tegucigalpa
  • Villa San Miguel

What to visit in San Pedro Sula:

  • Museum of Anthropology and History of San Pedro Sula
  • Mercado Guamilito
  • Citymall
  • Cusuco National Park
