Brazil is another big market that Copa Airlines serves from Panama. In the early 2000s, with the introduction of the Boeing 737NG, Copa Airlines expanded to the south and inaugurated their route Panama City-São Paulo. With their young fleet of 737s, Copa Airlines operates to the following Brazilian cities (updated 2024):

  • Belo Horizonte
  • Brasília
  • Florianópolis
  • Manaus
  • Porto Alegre (to resume in December 2024, paused since May 2024 due to the consequences of the heavy rainfalls in the region)
  • Rio de Janeiro
  • São Paulo

However, despite all the fanfare and the joyful ceremonies, Copa Airlines had unfortunately to withdraw from some cities in the country, as the routes were not meeting their expectations and thus causing costly losses:

  • Campinas (2014-2015)
  • Fortaleza (2018-2019)
  • Recife (not resumed since Covid)
  • Salvador de Bahía (not resumed since Covid)

Right next to Panama, Colombia is one the most popular destinations for passengers traveling with Copa Airlines. The airline entered in the Colombian market in the 1960s as the network was growing and started adding their first international destinations, landing at Medellín and Barranquilla. Today, Copa Airlines flies to the following cities in Colombia (updated 2024):

  • Armenia
  • Barranquilla
  • Bogotá
  • Bucaramanga
  • Cali
  • Cartagena
  • Cúcuta (until 2016, again since 2021)
  • Medellín
  • Pereira
  • San Andrés
  • Santa Marta

Copa Airlines also has some businesses in Colombia, since they purchased AeroRepública and later rebranding it as Copa Airlines Colombia, and then creating the low-cost brand Wingo, to replace Copa Airlines Colombia. There was a time also, in which Copa Airlines also considered in buying their rival Avianca, when the latter filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection in 2004.

Wow I didn’t knew Copa tried to buy avianca 😯

Tell me you used to owned by Continental without telling me you used to be owned by Continental.

Incredible but true. They tried to acquire Avianca in 2004, but since the bid failed they went after AeroRepública.

During the creation of the “Hub of the Americas” in the 1990s, Copa Airlines landed in Mexico when they inaugurated the Panama City-Mexico City route. Today, Copa Airlines operates in 5 cities in Mexico (updated 2024):

  • Cancún
  • Guadalajara
  • Mexico City (MEX, NLU)
  • Monterrey
  • Tulum

Despite their efforts to increase their presence in the Mexican market, Copa Airlines had to withdraw some routes as they were not meeting their expectations and thus losing valuable money:

  • Puebla
  • Puerto Vallarta (not resumed since the Covid pandemic)
  • Villahermosa

Throughout their history, Copa Airlines created alliances with two Mexican airlines: Mexicana de Aviación and Aeromexico. Mexicana also had flights to Panama until their closure in 2010, Aeromexico later started flying to Panama but the route has not been resumed since the Covid pandemic. Copa Airlines is the only airline flying between Panama and Mexico at the moment.

Copa Airlines has sponsored and participated in several campaigns created by the Panamanian government in order to promote and foment tourism in the country, which is one of our main industries. And like any other carrier, Copa Airlines painted some of their airplanes to promote the image of Panama to every city they fly to. Their special liveries promoting Panama are (or were):

( * = no longer using the special livery/repainted back to the normal livery)

More recently, (and also mentioned in a previous post) in an effort to attract tourists (with safety), Copa Airlines joined PROMTUR (Tourism Promotion Fund) in recording a new safety video. The project started in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the plans of release. The beginning of the video was modified to include a welcome message, with pilots, flight attendants and ground crews wearing facemasks and socially distanced, as a way to promote the biosecurity guidelines often practiced to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

This new safety video is also a tour around some of the relevant/popular places in Panama, showcasing the country’s cultural diversity and landscapes.

As mentioned in previous posts, the Boeing 737 has been Copa’s main airplane of their history. Copa Airlines has been a loyal Boeing customer since the 1980s when their first Boeing 737 arrived to their fleet.

Back in 2012, a few years after Boeing launched the Boeing 737 MAX program, Copa Airlines started studying the possibility of adding the airplane as part of their plans to modernize their fleet. It wasn’t until 2015 when Copa Airlines and Boeing formally announced the official order of 61 737 MAXs, the largest purchase made by a Panamanian airline, the order’s total cost was of $6.6 billions, $1.35 billions more than the Panama Canal expansion project.

The announcement was made during the 7th Summit of the Americas held at Panama City on April 15th, 2015. The people present at the event were US president Barack Obama, Panamanian president Juan Carlos Varela, Boeing CEO Jim McNerney, Copa Holdings chairman Stanley Motta and Copa Airlines CEO Pedro Heilbron.

The first airplane of the order, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 registered HP-9901CMP, arrived at Panama on August 31st, 2018, and thus becoming the first Latin American customer of the 737 MAX 9.

Copa Airlines’ hub, Tocumen International Airport, is the busiest airport in Central America. The airport was opened in 1947, though the terminal itself wasn’t finished until 7 years after the inauguration.

Over time, the airport received more passengers, to the point the airport became saturated. The construction of the new (and current) terminal started on 1971 and was finished in 1978. It continued to have the name of “Tocumen” but it was later renamed after the former dictator Omar Torrijos in 1981, who died on an airplane crash that same year. After the US invasion in 1989, it was renamed “Tocumen International Airport” again. From the 1990s, Copa Airlines made of Tocumen Airport an important connection hub in the region and the main gateway to Panama and to most of the main cities in the Americas.

From 2011 with the inauguration of the north pier, the airport has had major renovations and expansions in order to cope with the increasing traffic of passengers and cargo, and more recently, the new Terminal 2 was opened to further expand the overall capacity.

More about the airport and a picture gallery below:

I personally hope that more airlines will arrive in Panama now that there’s more space, in particular Jetblue, Alaska Airlines, Southwest, Westjet, Volaris, Air Canada, Aerolineas Argentinas, LATAM, Lufthansa/Discover, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Azul, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and leisure/charter carriers like TUI, Sunwing, Air Transat, Edelweiss, and Condor to bring in more tourists, foment economic growth and further consolidate Panama’s role as an important connection hub of the region.

After the Covid pandemic, Tocumen is aiming at becoming an important cargo and logistics hub in the region. The original passenger terminal, now the cargo apron, has become busier like never before.

Copa Airlines’ fleet has had some drastic changes over the last years. With the introduction of the 737 MAX, the company has been looking to retire/sell their old airplanes, starting with the retirement of their first 737-700 in 2015 and the E190s. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the retirement process of these aircraft. Some 737-700s were withdrawn definitely while the E190s were sold to Alliance Airlines and are now flying around the Australian skies.

The fleet is currently made up by 9 B737-700s, 58 B737-800s, 32 B737 MAX 9s and 1 B737 MAX 8 (updated 2024).

For now it all seems that Copa will remain an all-737 fleet. However, the CEO has pointed out that there’s still some possibility in adding other airplanes to increase their capacity. Some years ago, Boeing proposed the development of an airplane that has been popularly called “Boeing 797” or more formally called “New Midsize Airplane.”

This NMA airplane would carry between 225-275 passengers and fly between 8300km and 9300km, it’s a combination of a narrowbody and a widebody airplane.

Few airlines so far have expressed their interest in purchasing this airplane if it becomes a reality, and Copa Airlines is one of them. While the CEO said an order for this airplane doesn’t mean new destinations, the NMA airplane would help Copa to increase their capacity in their busiest routes. What does the future hold for Copa Airlines? Time will tell.

What you’re seeing below is one of the saddest consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic: parked airplanes on aprons and taxiways, an airline paralyzed and several employees sent home.

Despite the desperate situation, Copa Airlines made it through the national lockdown and was able to restart operations by the end of the 3rd quarter of 2020, as soon as Panama reopened its borders.
