Copa Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8

Not a good idea if you think about it
United already operates this route twice daily and copa already flies to JFK

Yea but maybe a cheaper alternative though?

Where should Copa Airlines fly next? Ottawa, Canada

Originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples, Ottawa’s modern history began with the construction of the Rideau Canal in the 1820s. In 1857, Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the capital of the newly formed Dominion of Canada, a compromise to resolve political disputes between major cities. Ottawa grew significantly as the seat of government, attracting skilled workers and developing a strong civil service.

Ottawa is officially bilingual, with both English and French as official languages, reflecting Canada’s multicultural identity. The city boasts a thriving arts scene with numerous museums, galleries, theaters, and live music venues. The National Gallery of Canada is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. Ottawa hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year, including the renowned Canadian Tulip Festival in spring.

Places to visit in Ottawa include:

  • Parliament Hill
  • Rideau Canal
  • Museums: the Canadian Museum of History, the Canadian Museum of Nature, and the Canadian War Museum.
  • ByWard Market
  • Gatineau Park

The airport for this destination would be Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport.

Last year Copa Airlines introduced the 737 MAX 8 to their fleet, now flying in some select destinations. The airline expects to receive more throughout 2025 to meet travel demands. As announced last year, Copa Airlines was forced to roll back flights to 4 cities: Mexico City (NLU), Santiago de los Caballeros, Tulum and Armenia (Colombia), due to delays in Boeing’s 737 MAX deliveries.

Hopefully this year the fleet will grow and allow Copa to return to these cities and open new routes.

@Mort look they actually used to fly there

I wonder why they pulled out from Liberia 🧐

Like all of the destinations they served until March 2020: Covid-19. They haven’t made plans to return. If they served the route without other interruptions until 2020, I can presume the route was profitable, until they were forced to stop flying completely.

Recently, Copa Airlines announced plans to create over 3000 job positions and add up to 57 airplanes during the next 5 years. Pedro Heilbron, the airline's CEO remains optimistic about the airline's growth in the future.

In 2007, Copa Airlines joined Skyteam as an associated member, thanks to the alliance with Continental Airlines, which was a full member at that time.

However, their stay didn’t last very long. During an ALTA summit in 2008 at Cancún, Copa Airlines’ executives revealed that the airline was in talks with the Star Alliance leadership, discussing about the possibility of joining them.

In 2009, Copa Airlines announced their withdrawal from Skyteam on October 24, they exited the same day as Continental Airlines, who was already in preparations to join Star Alliance shortly after on October 27. In 2010, Copa Airlines announced that the airline will join Star Alliance by mid-2012, reuniting with their old partner Continental which was later acquired by United Airlines.

In 1999, Copa Airlines received their first 737NG, a Boeing 737-700 registered as HP-1369CMP and started retiring the older 737-200s. Thanks to the 737NG, the airline started operating longer flights like Los Angeles (LAX), Santiago (SCL) and Buenos Aires (EZE). Sadly, HP-1369CMP was retired from the fleet in 2015, it’s now flying with United Airlines as N15751. Copa Airlines has 9 Boeing 737-700s still in fleet.

Copa Airlines expanded their fleet in 2003, when they introduced the Boeing 737-800. The first airplane of this type was HP-1522CMP. Today, the airframe is flying as a freighter plane within the airline’s recent dedicated air cargo division.
