Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Nicaragua

North of Costa Rica, lies the country of Nicaragua. Its capital city of Managua, is part of Copa Airlines’ network map. Though officially founded as a city in 1846, the efforts to make it the nation’s capital following the independence from Spain started back in 1824. Managua is located between the towns of León and Granada, both fighting to have the status of capital city, the dispute was resolved in 1852 when Managua was named the capital of Nicaragua.

Since then, the city has faced several challenges that affected the development and progress such as natural disasters like the 1972 earthquake and the destructive consequences left behind by the civil war between the 70s and 80s has put Managua on a difficult and desperate situation, but overtime the city became one of the largest in Central America and an important economic hub of Nicaragua. Today, Nicaragua is submerged in a political and social crisis under the Ortega regime, limiting, violating human and constitutional rights and suppressing the opposition.

Copa Airlines operates at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport.

Places to visit in Managua:
