Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Mexico

In 1992, with the creation of the Hub of the Americas, Copa Airlines expanded its network by adding several cities in Latin America. Among the new destinations at the time was Mexico City. To this date, it’s one of the airline’s busiest routes.

Mexico is the largest Spanish-speaking country in terms of population, and has the largest number of UNESCO heritage sites in North America. Tourism is an essential part of the economy, as is one of the most visited countries in the world. The country has had significant economic, political and social gains, but it has been dealing with pressing issues like criminality (especially organized crime, drug cartels), poverty and systemic corruption in the government. Once the home of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations, Mexico’s culture broke barriers and extended throughout the world. People today can have a taste of its cuisine and experience their music, dancing and art, even without having to visit Mexico.

Mexico City is the capital of Mexico, one of the largest metropolis in Latin America. The city’s roots trace back to the Aztec civilization, who founded Tenochtitlan in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco. It was a powerful and sophisticated city with intricate canals and impressive architecture. In 1521, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés conquered Tenochtitlan, razing it to the ground. On its ruins, he built Mexico City, making it the capital of New Spain. Mexico City remained the capital after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. It has since experienced periods of political turmoil and social change, emerging as a modern metropolis.

Aztec and other indigenous cultures have left a lasting mark on Mexico City. Traditional crafts, music, and dance are still celebrated today. The historic center of Mexico City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing stunning colonial architecture, including the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace. Mexico City is a hub for contemporary art and design, with numerous galleries, museums, and street art adorning its walls. The city is situated on the site of an ancient lake, and some areas still experience occasional flooding. Copa Airlines flies to two airports that serve Mexico City: Benito Juárez International Airport and Felipe Ángeles International Airport.

Places to visit in Mexico City include:

  • Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución)
  • Teotihuacán
  • Xochimilco
  • Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul)
  • Chapultepec Park

Founded in 1542 by Spanish conquistadors, Guadalajara quickly became a significant center of Spanish colonial rule in Mexico. It served as the capital of the province of Nueva Galicia and played a vital role in the colonial economy, particularly in mining and agriculture. During the Mexican War of Independence, Guadalajara was a key battleground. After Mexico gained independence in 1821, the city continued to grow and prosper, becoming a major cultural and economic hub. In the 20th century, Guadalajara experienced significant industrialization and urbanization. It has emerged as a modern metropolis while preserving its historical charm.

Guadalajara is the birthplace of mariachi music, a distinctive style of Mexican folk music characterized by its festive and celebratory nature. Mariachi bands are a common sight in the city, performing in restaurants, plazas, and at special events. The region surrounding Guadalajara is famous for producing tequila, a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant. Tequila is an integral part of Mexican culture, and visitors can tour tequila distilleries and sample various brands. Charrería, a traditional Mexican equestrian sport, is also deeply rooted in Guadalajara’s culture. Charreadas, or rodeos, are held throughout the year and showcase the skill and athleticism of charros (cowboys). Copa Airlines flies to Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport, for their flights to Guadalajara.

Places to visit in Guadalajara include:

  • Historic Center of Guadalajara
  • Catedral Metropolitana
  • Museo Regional de Guadalajara

Founded in 1596 by Diego de Montemayor, Monterrey grew slowly due to its isolation and lack of mineral wealth. However, its strategic location on trade routes and its proximity to the United States would later play a significant role in its development. In the 19th century, Monterrey experienced significant growth, particularly after the construction of railroads connecting it to the United States. The city became a hub for industrial activity, attracting investment and skilled labor. The 20th century saw Monterrey’s transformation into a major industrial center. The establishment of the Monterrey Foundry in 1900 marked the beginning of a period of rapid industrialization. The city also became a center for education and innovation.

Monterrey’s cuisine is influenced by its northern location, with dishes like cabrito (roasted goat), machaca (dried and shredded beef), and cabrito al pastor (marinated goat meat cooked on a vertical spit). The city has a strong musical tradition, with genres like norteño and cumbia being popular. Folk dances like the huapango and the fandango are also performed. Monterrey hosts various festivals throughout the year, including the International Festival of Santa Lucía, which features cultural events, concerts, and art exhibits. Before becoming a world-class tourist destination, Cancún was a small fishing village inhabited by the Maya civilization. The city’s rapid transformation began in the 1970s when the Mexican government embarked on an ambitious project to develop the region into a major tourist hub. The pristine beaches, warm climate, and abundant marine life made it an ideal location for luxury resorts and water sports.

While Cancún is primarily a tourist destination, it still offers glimpses into Mexican culture. Visitors can experience traditional Mexican cuisine at local restaurants, explore Mayan ruins nearby, and witness colorful cultural performances. However, the city’s culture is largely influenced by international tourism, with a diverse range of cuisines, languages, and entertainment options. The well-preserved ruins, perched atop cliffs overlooking the turquoise waters, offer a glimpse into the rich history of the Mayan civilization.

While Tulum has a strong Mayan heritage, its culture is a blend of ancient traditions and modern influences. The town’s laid-back atmosphere, bohemian vibe, and eco-friendly ethos attract visitors from around the world. Yoga retreats, organic restaurants, and sustainable fashion boutiques have become synonymous with Tulum’s unique culture.
