Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Guyana
Georgetown was founded by the British in 1781 and named after King George III. However, it was largely rebuilt by the French in 1784. When the Dutch regained control in 1784, they renamed it Stabroek. The British took control again in 1812 and renamed it again Georgetown. The plantation economy in the region relied heavily on enslaved African labor. After the abolition of slavery in the 19th century, Indian indentured laborers were brought to work on the plantations. This diverse heritage has shaped the city’s unique cultural identity. Georgetown became the capital of independent Guyana in 1966.
Georgetown’s culture is a reflects its diverse population. Indian, African, Chinese, and European influences have blended to create a unique cultural landscape. Guyanese cuisine is a delicious fusion of flavors, with dishes like roti, curry, and pepperpot. Street food, such as pholourie and achar, is popular among locals and visitors alike. Georgetown hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year, including Phagwah (Holi), Diwali, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Mashramani (independence celebrations). Copa Airlines flies to Cheddi Jagan International Airport, for their flights to Georgetown.
