Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Bolivia
Santa Cruz de la Sierra, often simply called Santa Cruz, is the largest city in Bolivia and the capital of the Santa Cruz Department. It’s located in the eastern lowlands of the country, known for its tropical climate and vibrant culture. Founded in 1561 by Spanish conquistador Ñuflo de Chávez, Santa Cruz de la Sierra was originally established about 200 kilometers east of its current location. Due to attacks from indigenous tribes, the city was relocated several times before finally settling on the banks of the Pirai River in its present location in the late 16th century.
For a long time, and even after Bolivia’s independence from Spain, Santa Cruz remained a small town with little attraction, it wasn’t until after the mid 20th century when agrarian and land reforms were introduced, and city began to grow at a very fast pace. Today, Santa Cruz is the largest city in Bolivia, and accounts for the country’s 35% of its GDP. Copa Airlines flies to Viru Viru International Airport, for its flights to Santa Cruz
