Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Peru
We leave Ecuador to visit the land of the Incans: Peru. We land at its capital city of Lima. One of the largest cities in South America, the country where once the Incan Empire stood, it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro, a Spanish conquistador in 1532. It became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru and site of the Real Audiencia.
It eventually became the place where Peru would declare its independence from the Spanish crown, in 1821. Today, Lima hosts the three branches of Peru’s government and has been a melting pot, due to strong influence of European, Asian, African and Andean cultures. It’s also Peru’s main economic and cultural center, and one of the most populated urban agglomerates in the world.
Some places to visit at Lima are:
- Miraflores
- Pachacamac
- Museo Oro del Perú
- Cathedral of Lima
- Plaza de Armas
Up north from Lima, lies the city of Chiclayo, Copa Airlines’ most recent destination in Peru. Historically speaking, Chiclayo played a key role in Peru’s independence, by providing support to general José de San Martín’s army, eventually gaining recognition as “Heroic City.”
Today, the city remains the main economic hub for Northern Peru, as well as an important touristic attraction for the region. Some places to visit in Chiclayo are:
- Sicán National Museum
- Paseo de las Musas
- Iglesia Santa María
- Mercado de las Brujas
- Túcume (Valley of the Pyramids)
