Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Colombia [Part II]

We move to the city of Armenia . As part of the Coffee Triangle, Armenia is deeply rooted in coffee culture. You can visit coffee plantations, learn about the production process, and savor traditional Colombian coffee. You can also visit the Cocora Valley, located near Armenia, is home to the wax palm trees, the tallest palm trees in the world. Hiking through the valley offers wonderful views and a unique experience.

For those who like the nature and landscapes, Los Nevados National Park offers opportunities for hiking, camping, and exploring high-altitude ecosystems, including snow-capped volcanoes. Armenia offers cultural attractions like the Quimbaya Gold Museum, which houses a collection of pre-Columbian gold artifacts. We travel north, to the capital of the department of Atlántico: Barranquilla. Also known as “Curramba la Bella” or “The Golden Gate of Colombia,” is a vibrant city located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, and fourth-largest city in the country. The most famous is the Carnaval de Barranquilla, one of the largest carnivals in the world, celebrated with colorful parades, music, and dancing. The city also has a rich history, with influences from indigenous, African, and European cultures.

Barranquilla’s strategic location on the Magdalena River and its proximity to the Caribbean Sea make it a major port city and a gateway to Colombia. It’s an important industrial and commercial center, contributing significantly to the country’s economy. With its coastal location, Barranquilla offers beautiful beaches where you can relax, sunbathe, and enjoy water sports. Not far, west from Barranquilla, we find Cartagena. The city offers a unique blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and vibrant energy, making it a captivating destination for travelers. The city has something for everyone, from history buffs to beach lovers to partygoers.

The city’s well-preserved colonial center, surrounded by impressive stone walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walls were built in the 16th and 17th centuries to protect the city from pirates and invaders. Other historic sites include the San Felipe de Barajas Castle. The castle was built in the 16th century and is one of the largest fortifications in South America. Touristic sites include the islands of Barú and Rosario. East of Barranquilla, we find Santa Marta. The city holds the title of being the oldest one in Colombia, founded in 1525. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a mountain range that’s home to the highest coastal peaks in the world, offers opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring indigenous communities. Other places worth visiting are the Rodadero Beach, which offers a wide range of accommodations, restaurants, and water sports, and the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida), an ancient city, hidden deep within the Sierra Nevada, is a challenging but rewarding trek for experienced hikers.

Next to the border with Venezuela we find the city of Cúcuta. it’s the capital of the Norte de Santander department. It’s known for its strategic location on the border with Venezuela, making it a hub for trade and cultural exchange. Cúcuta played a crucial role in Colombia’s history, as it was the site of the Congress of 1821, where the Constitution of Cúcuta was written and approved.

The city is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, including the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes and the Catatumbo River. Cúcuta hosts various festivals throughout the year, such as the Festival de la Cúcuta, which celebrates local music, dance, and cuisine. The city has colonial buildings, such as the San José Cathedral and the Santander House. Copa Airlines flies to Camilo Daza International Airport, for their flights to Cúcuta.

We finish the tour in Colombia at San Andrés Island, a Caribbean paradise located off the coast of Colombia. It’s believed that Christopher Columbus may have sighted the island during his fourth voyage in 1502. The island has been influenced by various European powers, including the Spanish, Dutch, and English. Due to its strategic location, San Andrés was a popular haven for pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries. Famous pirates like Henry Morgan are said to have frequented the island.

The island is renowned for its turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it a popular destination for snorkeling, diving, and other water sports. The island has a distinct Afro-Caribbean culture, influenced by the Raizal people, who have lived there for centuries. This culture is evident in the music, food, and language. San Andrés is a duty-free zone, making it a great place to shop for electronics, liquor, and other goods.
