Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Aruba
We conclude the trip around the Caribbean at Aruba’s capital city: Oranjestad. Aruba is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, just like Curaçao and Sint Maarten, which are also Copa Airlines destinations.
The town itself was built around 1796, near Fort Zoutman, a military fortification. The town didn’t have a formal name, it was commonly called “Paardenbaai” (Bay of Horses), since the place was mostly for raise and exporting horses to nearby Curaçao and Jamaica, it wasn’t an international trade center nor it didn’t have plantations that would help the island to boost their economy.
Eventually Oranjestad became the capital of Aruba by 1824. It was named after the king William I of the Netherlands. During that time, interest in Aruba increased thanks to the discovery of alluvial gold deposits. Since the 1960s, tourism became more important and has resulted in the creation of a large hotel zone. Copa Airlines flies to Queen Beatrix International Airport for their flights to Aruba.
Some places to visit at Oranjestad are:
- Hooiberg
- Renaissance Mall
- Balashi Gold Mill Ruins
- Fort Zoutman
- Seaport Village
