Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Curaçao
We’re nearing our trip around the destinations Copa Airlines maintains in the Caribbean. We leave Trinidad and Tobago and land at Curaçao’s capital city: Willemstad. The island of Curaçao was originally conquered and managed by the Spanish until the Dutch captured the territory in 1634. Willemstad was originally a walled city, and a main center of slave trade in the region. Many towns were being built outside the walled city, until the demolition of said walls in 1861. Willemstad became a more affluent city thanks to oil and phosphate industries.
Willemstad is also strong in tourism, thanks to the old colonial buildings that still preserve the architectural style of the time, eventually becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Copa Airlines flies to Hato International Airport for their flights to Willemstad. Some of the places people can visit in Willemstad are:
- Punda
- Curaçao Sea Aquarium
- Kura Hulanda Museum
- Maritime Museum Curaçao
- Blue Bay Beach
