Copa Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8

Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Barbados

Going roughly southeast, we arrive at Barbados’ capital city of Bridgetown. During the colonization era, the island of Barbados was uninhabited when the British arrived, although some studies later revealed indigenous pre-existence in the area. It wasn’t until 1628 when the first settlers arrived, mostly London merchants.

By 1824, Bridgetown became the seat of the Anglican Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands. On 1925, the city petitioned the UK a local government, but the proposal didn’t succeed until 1958 when the Local Government Act was passed. Barbados gained independence from the UK in 1966 but remained in the Commonwealth and recognized the British monarch as the main authority. In November 2021, Barbados became a republic. Copa Airlines flies to Grantley Adams International Airport for their flights to Bridgetown.

Some places to visit at Bridgetown are:

  • Carlisle Bay
  • Barbados Garrison
  • Barbados Museum & Historical Society
  • George Washington House
  • Independence Square
