Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Haiti
West of the Dominican Republic, we find Haiti. By the time of the colonization era, the island of Hispaniola was conquered by the Spanish, eventually the west side of the island became a French territory known as Saint-Domingue, and Port-au-Prince became the capital city. Years will pass and the Haitian Revolution started, ending with the independence of the colony in 1804, and Port-au-Prince became the capital city of the newly proclaimed country.
While the city is rich in culture like many in the world, it has endured unfortunately several disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes, but it hasn’t stopped the country from progressing. Copa Airlines used to fly to Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport. This route has not been resumed since the COVID-19 pandemic, and given the current social crisis, it doesn’t seem it will be resumed anytime soon.
Some places to visit in Port-au-Prince are:
- Champ de Mars
- Marche de Fer
- National Pantheon Museum
- Le Marron Inconnu
- Maison Dufort
