Copa Airlines’ Destinations in the Americas Tour: Jamaica
The trip continues south of Cuba, landing at Jamaica’s capital city: Kingston, one of the first international destinations of Copa Airlines. The city is the largest of the country, founded in 1692, following a devastating earthquake that destroyed Port Royal.
Today, Kingston is the main center of Jamaica’s economy, the seat of the government and the main point for several imports and exports, thanks to the Kingston Harbour and Norman Manley Airport. Kingston is the birthplace of several popular singers such as Bob Marley, Shaggy and Sean Paul. Copa Airlines operates at Norman Manley International Airport for their flights to Kingston.
Kingston is a city rich in culture like the rest of the cities around the world, below are some of the main attractions in the city:
- Bob Marley Museum
- Devon House
- Blue Mountains
- Emancipation Park
- Port Royal
Northwest of Kingston, lies the city of Montego Bay, it’s the 4th largest urban area in Jamaica and also the 2nd largest anglophone city in the Caribbean, after Kingston. The city is a Copa Airlines destinations since 2011, they operate at Sangster International Airport for their flights to Montego Bay.
The city was called originally “Golfo de Buen Tiempo” (Fair Weather Gulf) by Christopher Columbus when he first arrived at the island in 1494. The current name of the city is believed to be a corruption of the Spanish word “manteca” which means “lard” in English, supposedly because the Spanish while they controlled the island of Jamaica, they exported lard, beef and leather. Jamaica remained a Spanish colony until 1655 with the expedition of Oliver Cromwell, which enabled the British to remove the Spanish out of Jamaica.
Montego Bay is important for Jamaica’s economy, since it’s well known for its beaches and resorts. Besides the beaches, Montego Bay has some other attractions:
- Rose Hall
- Martha Brae River
- Greenwood Great House
- Sam Sharpe Square
- Montego Bay Cultural Center
