Contacting approach

Hey there,
Do you contact approach if you pass through their airspace (below FL180 and withhin 50 nm of the airport) if you’re not inbound, as that’s what they do IRL, or not contact approach?

Yes that is right

You contact them whenever you hit 18000 feet MSL.

If i’m not inbound, I forgot to put that in

No need to contact Approach unless you are inbound to land. And if you are over 18,000’ you are not in their airspace.

It’s suggested so we know what you’re up to. You can request flight following to the airport your heading towards (as long as your within our airspace). We will move you around if we need to for traffic but otherwise we’ll keep you on the channel and then transfer you to the correct ATC or unicom when the time comes
