Confusion with Altitude Display During Landing - MSL vs. AGL

Hey Infinite Flight Community,

I wanted to share an experience I had recently during a flight from Campinas to Bogotá, especially when IFATC was featuring the region. As I was on final approach, I noticed something that left me a bit puzzled. My HUD display showed an altitude of 7,000 feet just before touchdown, which seemed way too high for landing.

It turns out I was following the MSL (Mean Sea Level) altitude, not the AGL (Above Ground Level) altitude. In Infinite Flight, the HUD displays MSL by default, which represents the altitude above sea level. However, AGL represents the altitude above the terrain directly below the aircraft. Because Bogotá is situated at a high elevation, the MSL reading can be much higher than what you’d expect if you were near sea level.

This situation highlighted the importance of understanding the difference between MSL and AGL, especially when flying into airports at higher elevations. I think it would be really useful to have an AGL selector alongside the MSL display in the HUD, as it could help pilots avoid this kind of confusion in the future.
Luckily I did not crash because VNAV directed me safely.

Please feel free to flag me

Has anyone else experienced something similar? What do you all think about the idea of an AGL selector?

Happy flying!

Hello!

Hope i have read it correctly. You could select AGL at the bottom of your screen. There’s a function that allows you to do that. Once you have selected that, you can always check back at it every few seconds to check your altitude

Hi! I do the same as Avean said: putting altitude AGL on the bottom my screen since I’ve been to Mexican highlands and was confused due to the altimeter showing altitude MSL instead of AGL. Because of this, I always check the altitudes of departure and arrival airports so I can plan my flight better. The rule of thumb is that I always add 3000ft to the arrival airport’s altitude at the beginning of the cone.
