So, Toronto City Airport. I’d forgive you if you’ve never heard about it. Located on a chain of islands just south of downtown Toronto, it presents one of the most unique spotting experiences anywhere in North America. I visited back in August and upon sharing the photos with @callaa, I got this message:
And I said you know what? That’s a great idea! Why have I never seen this attempted? Well, this shot only really works during the winter. In the winter, the ferry to the spot does not run - it only goes to other side of the island 6 km away.
So, I got a bike, some willpower, and a lot (I mean a lot) of layers to combat the freezing temperatures. I drove downtown, took the ferry over, and biked the distance through snow and ice to reach the spot. To spot like three planes. And it was so worth it.
Gear: Sony α7iii & Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS
First, I tried a 1/60. It worked but it wasn’t the visual effect I wanted. Next aircraft, I turned it down to 1/30.
Then they switched runways. I spent roughly 4 hours in Toronto traffic, on the ferry, and biking, to spot 3 planes. Would I do it again? Maybe, maybe not. Was it worth it? Yes.
Don’t be afraid to get out there and try new things!
I would like to formally apologize to the α7iii for doubting its autofocus. I’m sorry camera I was not familiar with your game.
Your A7iii doesn’t accept your apology and wants you to have a spotting session with me and swap with my Nikon D3500 to punish you.
Trying new trying is vital to learn and get better. For another example, I did some night work also but on a propane fire pit. After about 30 shots I got this result. I was cooking with gas that night, literally. I mean the image is 🔥!
