History

The airport was first created in 1923 and used as a flight school airport. The first hangar, however, was not created until 3 years after the airstrip opened. The airport eventually got shut down due to its close proximity to the Santa Ana airbase operated during World War II. In 1964, the airport was completely rebuilt with the parallel runway configuration that is still in operation today. The longer runway was intended to hold jetliners to possibly attract tourism. In 1967, the new terminal was completed and was expected to hold 400,000 passengers a year. In 1974, another renovation occurred which added two new holding areas and more baggage claims to the terminal. In 1979, the airport was renamed after John Wayne. In 1990, the airport’s terminal got another new renovation which added more gates, totaling to 14. In 2011, the expansion which included the addition of Terminal C began. To this date there are three Terminals holding a total of 22 gates.

Aircraft Noise Curfew

History
The area surrounding SNA is considered to be a “noise sensitive area.” In 1985 the local government met up with the community to come to an agreement for the SNA operations and local communities near the airport. In 2003 they came to an agreement to increase aircraft operations while also decreasing noise in the surrounding areas.

About
The curfew states that commercial aircraft cannot depart between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Arriving traffic is not permitted between the hours of 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM (8:00 on Sundays). Private aircraft are expected to pitch at a 20 degree angle while commercial are at 25. Weight restrictions are also in effect because of the airport’s short runway.

MD11F/DC10F? Nice guide btw

Ironically it can hold those two types of aircraft however they are rarely used for cargo flights to SNA.

Yeah it would be hard for the MD-11 to takeoff because that aircraft needs a lot of runway I believe
