You need a lot of practice.

  • You gave me the line up and wait instruction although there was no traffic, so just clear me for takeoff
  • You cleared me to land although I was remaining in the pattern which means I’ll do touch and go’s so you have to clear me for te option

Thanks… aren’t you meant to contact with base and downwind??

No, you have to clear me for the option, nothing else as I’m remaining in the pattern

Why are you taking so long to give clearance ?

He is probably operating a uk style controlling style Which is clear only when the runway is clear

Wow my landing sucked. Windy day and a bad time for me to drop my device.

If a plane is remaining in the pattern you give them a sequence (if they are not number 1) and then clear them for the option (and direction if it needs to change). As a pilot in the pattern there is no need to report anything. No downwind, no base, no final. Some pilots feel the need to report their positions on every leg of the pattern, which clogs the frequency.

If you as a pilot change your mind and want to do a full stop, you may report your position and say full stop, but this is not a requirement. If a pilot reports full stop, ATC does NOT need to re-clear them to land as “cleared for the option” includes permission to do a full stop. The goal is to not clutter up the frequency with unnecessary commands.

Avoid using the Turn Base command so often. Pilots know what the pattern is and know where they need to turn based on their altitude. You can give a turn base command but you need to be aware of their altitude. If they turn too early it could cause them to miss the intercept and go around. If you want to be the one to tell them where to turn, use the “I’ll call your base” command so they know. Also try to only use this when you are trying to slot people in with traffic, do not try to control every aspect of every flight, it will drive you crazy when you have multiple inbound.

Since some people commented on the line up and wait, be sure to look at Tyler’s video on departures. It is a great tutorial on ground spacing and getting people in the air as quickly as possible while maintaining order.

Also if someone is practicing ATC in preparation for recruiting, please do not take their approach. We as scouts need to evaluate pattern usage and sequencing from the tower and approach takes all of that away and does not help the person learning.

Thanks for the feedback… Out of 10 I get a??

I agree with what @Chris_S said.
Also you overuse the the Cleared for immediate takeoff command.
Also READ the command the pilot sends after they exit the runway. I wanted to go back to the runway and you cleared me to parking. It took me 5 attempts in order for you to clear me.

I think Chris covered what you need to know.

The other thing on my mind is that you got someone to follow me on left downwind when i was on my first circuit at right downwind. Thought it might be a mistake but you did it again to someone on the left downwind where you said to follow the aircraft on right downwind.
