London Heathrow airport (eng. London Heathrow Airport; IATA: LHR, ICAO: EGLL, FAA LID: EGLL) is the largest international airport in London. The seventh busiest passenger airport in the world in 2016 (75.7 million people), and the first in Europe. It is located 24 km West of Central London. It includes 5 passenger terminals and one cargo terminal. The last terminal, terminal 5, was opened on 14 March 2008 by Queen Elizabeth II.
The airport is located West of London, its runways are oriented West to East, which means that the planes have to take off directly above the city. Other major European airports, such as the airports of Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris, are located in the southern or Northern part of the city, thus avoiding such problems.
Other features of the airport: low location above sea level (25 meters) and frequent fogs.
