that top photo would be exactly how it should look like down low and up high as well, that’s exactly what we all want even if its not as detailed as the bottom one
on point on this.
if there was a VA like IFAET but for the houses and buildings i would do it and build them
This is an interesting request. I don’t see the idea of this happening for at least another couple of years
The 3D buildings would most likely be OSM, or just generated.
I dont see the need to make the entire city in 3D, atleast for now.
just make the imagery luminate at night will make the difference.
imagine…
It would be such an amazing feature for flying at night. :)
That would be cool!
bumping lol
Let’s see where August 2025 gets us in terms of city lights. 😂 the 10 year anniversary for this thread.
Oh, the pain I feel in my heart every time I see somebody link this thread and I see it’s from 2015 😪
keep this thread alive! Let’s light up the city and make City lights come alive!
It will be a miracle if that happens. The vote system is not actually effective here. This thread for example and many more livery and aircraft threads
I think you might be mistaken here. The voting system on Infinite Flight has proven to be effective, as we’ve seen with the updates for the A380 and the 737 MAX.
However, it’s important to remember that the IF developers are a small team, and they face significant limitations due to the performance capabilities of modern devices. Not all users have high-end phones or tablets, so the developers must make careful decisions to maintain a good balance between stability and new features.
If they were to implement all the requested features, like advanced lighting, weather systems, and city lighting, it would likely make the game unplayable for around 80% of the player base, which wouldn’t be a viable solution.
Project metal is the key but it’s take time. So we just have to be a bit more patient.
So here’s the thing….
- City lights can be replicated in many ways. It doesn’t need to actually have thousands of light sources. Infinite Flight doesn’t have dynamic lighting. So a texture is an easy solution. 9 years is a long time to think up a solution for it. Regardless of team size.
- The same applies to aircraft. Night lighting can be achieved with textures on the fuselage, it can also done the same way to react with the apron, taxiways and runways. The same way it was done for FS2002 and FS2004.
- The topics you cite as an example for the success of the voting system, doesn’t actually make your point. There’s so many topics where aircraft, simpler features, liveries etc have hundreds and thousands of votes which are simpler to implement have just been around for years.
I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but there’s an equal amount of examples to prove the opposite and other ways to introduce certain features.
they could use the same they use for airport taxi lights
Exactly…
A texture might be a little less work on our devices. But yes I agree with you. The same method they use to replicate, runway and taxiway lights, they can use that for city lights. They’ll only need to maybe re-work some coding for the colour, intensity and distance it is visible. Because the runway lights actually pop into view when you’re closer to the airfield.
Also at night we can barely make out ground textures, so the city lights can just be groups of lights and string of lights to replicate roadways that don’t necessarily have to follow roads as the ground textures aren’t actually visible at light.
And correct me if a I am wrong, but the same photogrammetry used for ground textures during the day is also available for night time.
exactly at a certain time of the day the textures change from day to night which includes dark grounds and little white and yellow spots
I see your point, and you’re absolutely right about some aspects, like using textures for city lights or night lighting. These are creative solutions that could make things easier. But I think the challenge goes beyond just finding a technical fix. Even features that seem simple require time, resources, and a lot of testing to make sure they work properly across all devices without compromising performance.
It’s true that games like FS2002 or FS2004 managed to include these elements years ago, but the expectations for a mobile flight simulator like Infinite Flight today are much higher. The team has to strike a balance between adding features and maintaining the stability of the game without compromising the high quality standard they deliver to us every time with their updates actually.
As for the voting system, I agree it’s not perfect. There are plenty of highly requested features that haven’t been implemented yet. That said, updates like the A380 and the 737 MAX show that the team is listening and prioritizing based on what’s feasible.
At the end of the day, it’s a tough balancing act. Your suggestions are valid and make a lot of sense.
