Chinooks in the Sunset | Warngau, September 24, 2021

Hi there!

Since I have a slight backlog of pictures after the last weeks, welcome to another topic! This time, I didn’t have to travel to Switzerland but I just had to go to the next village since the US Army was doing 2 weeks of parachuting exercises at the local airstrip. On the last day of the training, weather was perfect for the last few flights of the two chinooks used for the operations.

The terrain around the airstrip allowed for some interesting angles with the nearby church and the surrounding hills as a background

Obviously I can not leave out the soldiers who landed back at the field after leaving the chinooks at 10000 feet.

Once all soldiers had landed, the helicopter would also land back at the field to pick them up for another round. After the training was complete we were lucky to see the helis land facing the sun after they used to park facing away from the sun during the normal operations.

After landing it was possible to get close to the helis for some more amazing pictures

The dimensions of the Chinooks and their rotors are just amazing

With both helis parked next to each other, picture opportunities were really great, with a nice little highlight being…

…spotting a Chinook from inside another Chinook

After quite some time on ground, the helis loaded up again and departed back to Illesheim and Stuttgart with all the attending soldiers on board.

I hope you liked these pics, more is still to come ;)

My Equipment:

Canon EOS 80D
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM (99% of pics)
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS II USM (for wide angle pics)

Backup / Old Lenses

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (for the 1% of the cases where I needed a wide angle lens, replaced by the 24-105 now)
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS STM (for the majority of my very old pics, bascially completely replaced by the 100-400 now)

What’s it gonna take to get included on this?

We want the oil, duh.

Well basically just requesting it usually 😂

And actually there used to be some oil around this area back in the last century, they came a bit too late here

Chinooks are so cool

I keep wondering if I want to call them helicopter or if „flying house“ is more appropriate

Thank you!
