I’m currently in the testing phase of the IFATC recruitment process and would appreciate your help getting some more ATC experience before my practical test.
I’m currently controlling at KEWR on the Training Server right now and would love it if you could stop by. If possible, please remain in the pattern, but feel free to land, taxi to a gate, and head out if that’s what works for you — all traffic is helpful!
Also, just a quick heads-up: I’m on a shaky connection at the moment, so if I disconnect for a second or two, don’t worry — I’ll be back online within seconds. It’s just a precaution in case it happens.
Thanks so much for the support — I really appreciate any help during this training session!
I’ll join in and do some basic pattern work with you for a little while. After I do so, I will type up a brief summary of feedback and also provide you with some resources to take a look at to help you improve your controlling skills. Lastly, please add me to the ping list for the next time you open up services. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, try making an ATC tracking thread like this:
Transition: remember that the formula for transitions is the airport altitude AGL + 2500ft, rounded UP to the nearest increment of 500ft. In this case, KEWR’s altitude of 17ft in that formula should result in a transition altitude of 3000ft. Inbound to the runway: at the position that my aircraft was at the time of requesting inbound to the runway, the appropriate command would have been to Enter left downwind Runway 22L instead of Enter left base Runway 22L Landing clearance: while yes, you did issue a landing clearance for me before I was on short final, you don’t have to wait that long. Waiting until the last minute can increase your workload during high traffic, reducing effectiveness but increasing stress. Also,
because I requested touch-and-go’s, while you did correctly clear me for the option, you failed to assign a pattern direction. The first time an aircraft is in a pattern, you need to assign a direction of traffic, most of the time of which will correspond to the runway being used. Other pattern things: you don’t need to issue a command to enter parts of the pattern. Once a pilot has been entered into it, they will automatically have clearance to fly it. Runway change: when I requested a runway change from 22L to 22R, assuming that there is no conflicting traffic and that the aircraft in question is remaining in the pattern, the appropriate command sequence would be as follows:
Pilot: KEWR Tower, OK-WAXY requesting change to Runway 22R Tower: OK-WAXY, enter right downwind Runway 22R Pilot: Enter right downwind Runway 22R, OK-WAXY Tower: OK-WAXY, winds XX @ XXX, Number X, cleared for the option, after the option, make right traffic. Pilot: Number X, cleared for the option, after the option, make right traffic, Runway 22R, OK-WAXY.
The “Turn crosswind” command would NOT be the correct option in this scenario.
Overall, I know it was a little difficult trying to do this while your internet was being annoying, but even so, there are a lot of things that can be fixed here. It’s okay, I was the same way when I started out it just takes practice. Next session, I’ll see about continuing to practice these things, and making sure that all the wrinkles get ironed out before adding anything else to the lessons.
