I often find that I have to descend rapidly,to be at the correct height. How do I calculate the cruising height of my route?

Thanks!

Calculate the top of descent according to at whatever altitude you decide to fly: How to compute the TOD (Top of Descent) - Thumb rule

Rule of thumb is: Cruise altitude = Trip distance (nm)

So for example for a 60 nm flight optimum is about 6000ft. For a trip of 170nm I would go up to around say 18,000ft. This applies up to about 300nm distances, for routes beyond that length just go up as high as you want really obviously not much higher than 40,000ft.

Top of descent is calculated as noted above.
