Today is a big day for aviation in Belgium as, for the first time ever, a brand new aircraft will join the fleet of the formerly known as Sabena, Brussels Airlines. Brussels Airlines placed an order of 3 Airbus A320neo back in June 2021 and an additional 2 was announced in late December 2022. Those fresh new aircraft will be joining the fleet starting from today until 2024 where all the five Airbus A320neo should be included in the fleet.

– June 29, 2021

Today, the Lufthansa Group Executive Board and the Board of Directors of SN Airholding have authorised the allocation of three Airbus A320neo to Brussels Airlines. With these new state-of-the-art aircraft, Belgium’s home carrier makes an essential step in the further modernisation of the airline’s fleet and herewith significantly lowers the CO2- and noise-emissions on its medium-haul network. It’s the very first time in the history of Brussels Airlines, that the company will phase in brand new aircraft, coming right from the manufacturer.

“As a responsible airline with ambitious sustainability targets, it’s crucial for us to continue our path of further modernizing our fleet. Thanks to our mother company Lufthansa, we are for the very first time in our 19 year-long history able to replace older A319 Airbus by three modern and fuel efficient aircraft that will leave the Airbus factory by summer 2023. Compared to our A319 aircraft, the three A320neo will allow a noise contour reduction of 50% and reduce fuel use and CO2-emissions by 11% per flight. Thanks to the higher seating capacity of this ultra-modern Airbus, the fuel use and CO2 emissions per seat decrease with 30%”

Peter Gerber , CEO of Brussels Airlines

– 7 December 2022

On top of the three brand new A320 neo (New Engine Option) aircraft joining the Brussels Airlines fleet in 2023, the board of directors approved the phase in of two additional new A320 neos for 2024. Today, fleet renewal is the most powerful measure to reduce CO2 and noise emissions from flights. Next to that, the Belgian home carrier is preparing for another successful summer with new destinations in Europe and additional frequencies to European destinations already flown. Moreover, Brussels Airlines expects its operations on the European sector to grow by 10% next summer. The airline is therefore planning 4 additional aircraft and over 200 additional own staff for next summer.

“In addition to fleet renewal, intermodality and alternative fuels are important pillars to achieve our climate ambitions. Connecting Brussels Airport to the high-speed train network is essential to reduce short flights. That is not the case today. In addition, most of the emissions come from long-haul flights, for which there is no suitable alternative today. That’s why we, together with the whole sector, must invest more in alternatives to fossil fuels. At Brussels Airlines we aspire to have the first flight with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in 2023. However, in order to use this more climate-friendly SAF on a large scale, major investments will have to be made in production facilities. Investments that we as a sector cannot bear alone.”

I was present at Brussels during her arrival! There were a lot of us spotters waiting to catch her.

Quite a historic moment for Brussels Airlines and the Belgian aviation industry. I’m excited for her four sisters to arrive in the future!

I would have liked to be here but wasn’t possible unfortunately.

Can’t wait as well for the four other to join the fleet!
