British Airways starts flying the 777 short haul!

British Airways has quietly added Madrid to the 777 route network. Starting from April 1st 2026. This is exciting since it’s rare for British Airways to operate a short haul route, on a wide body. Whilst Iberia also operate wide-bodies on the route, there’s a noticeable improvement with BA, since club suites will be on the route.

It will be a 1x daily service with the timings below

As someone who lives near London, I’m looking forward to trying it out next year!

Thanks for reading!

That is very interesting well they probably are going to use that route for the 777x and for pilot experience on the 777 normal

Yeah that’s fairly short for 777, back in the day they used to operate 777-200/300, 747-400 to Moscow which is just 3:30 flight.

Yes! Previously they have always used Madrid for these since they have a IFE license, the only city in Europe BA has a licence for.

Also, will be interesting to see if, even in economy, you get a meal. They said that on the website when I was looking - but that might be a glitch.

According to this post, it seems the flights will operate until the 5th of May

Yes that post is wrong, flights to Madrid on the 777 are still going in October-November! And it’s not the Gatwick Config, the aircraft will feature club suites.

Hhh am rolling on the ground
A 2HR FLIGHT
What on earth are they thinking

I think it’s too connect more pax between the European oneworld hubs. Finnair operate the A350-900 to Heathrow. And So do Iberia. My thought is

Connect through Heathrow (From Madrid or Helsinki) - To go to North America, or Africa.

Connect through Madrid (From London or Helsinki) - to go to South America

Connect through Helsinki (From London or Madrid) - to go to Asia.

With Heathrow being the main base for Oneworld in Europe.
