The news has officially arrived, British Airways announced earlier today in Miami that they will be painting one of their 747-400s in the old BOAC livery.
“The aircraft will leave the paint shop in Dublin and arrive into Heathrow on February 18, before entering service the following day. This coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first Boeing 747 flight only a few days earlier.” CEO Alex Cruz said. He also admitted that the decision to choose this livery was taken because “So many British Airways customers and colleagues have fond memories of our previous liveries, regularly sharing their photos from across the globe, so it’s incredibly exciting to be re-introducing this classic BOAC design.”
steady on…you will be telling us next that you are the orginal atlantic baron and it was you who passed up Orville and Wilbur’s spanners… ;-)
I remember watching the B747’s and Concorde in the “Red Tail” livery, but I think that BOAC livery looks very fresh and modern! Will have to keep an eye out when next heading out of LHR.
British Airways was formed from the amalgamation of BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) Long Haul and BEA (British European Airways) Short Haul.
The Airbus guys will probably want a BEA livery now too I would guess.
What I really hope to see is a formation flight with those 4 retro liveries including a regular BA livery. Just imagine how cool that would look. Then you’d only have to add the Red Arrows to it and it would be perfect.
The date is close for G-BYGC to fly in her new colors. The first routes have been announced. It’s first revenue flight will be from London Heathrow to JFK on February 19th. Also included is a sneak peak for you guys.
