Brg nav 1?

I have been on IF for a while now and I have yet to explore the “NAV” tab in game, can someone explain this?

It is good you’re looking for meaning of those and there are rather simple:

the BRG NAV 1 or (Bearing Nav 1) is one of the source you can use to navigate on the Sim, it can be switched to _Nav 2 (Can have ILS and VOR frequences on it )
_ADF (Can have only on at the time)
_GPS (From the normal GPS Sim)
_NAV 1 (Can have ILS and VOR frequences on it )

All of these sources are generally use on aircraft the haven’t the LNAV/VNAV features

Both of them have the same choices of sources BRG NAV 1 and 2 and you can use them when you want to explore the fun of Navigating from Ground navigation beacon to another with the ADF and VOR within the Sim world.

You should try on a C172 or the Super Cub. ; )

so is it basically ILS for the planes who don’t have ILS?

ILS uses NAV not GPS. It’s the same on all planes. It sounds like you may have been doing GPS approaches rather than ILS if you’ve not been using the NAV.

ILS is far more accurate than GPS approaches, particularly aligning to the runway.

Not necessarily, they probably just haven’t looked at the NAV menu to see it happen. Remember when you tune the ILS, it sets the frequency and course for you, and then sets the source to NAV1 when you hit APP if you don’t do it manually.

OP: Basically, you have two navigation radios on your plane: NAV1 and NAV2. You also have a GPS. There’s also something called an ADF (automatic direction finder) but I’m going to skip over that for now.

NAV1 and NAV2 can be used to track a VOR or ILS. When you tune an ILS, a frequency is dialled into to NAV1 (just like the communication radio). It also enters the runway course (essentually the direction of the runway). If you select the navigation source as NAV1, your LNAV will intercept and follow the localiser (the horizontal part of an ILS).

To get the plane to decend with the glideslope, as you likely know, you have to also select APP mode. But you can just use LNAV and decend manually, or by using a lower level of automation like VNAV or VS.

Another way to look at it is like this.

If you tune into a VOR and set Nav 1 for example, then setting the CRS1 in the heading you want the VOR to point you. Now if you switch to NAV1 as the source, you will now see the green line stretching across the VOR itself in the direction you set in CRS. Nav2/CRS2 is so you can set another at the same time if you wish. This I’ve found great for lining up approaches on RWYs without any procedures. You can use any VOR around the area to get the directional line on your HUD.

ADFs I’ve found simple will put a directional arrow on your hud, in which you can simply fly towards. Not sure setting any heading on CRS makes any difference to a ADF.
