What’s the most realistic way of applying breakaway thrust when ready to taxi? I’ve seen pilots apply full power for about 2 seconds and then back to idle, which of course is not realistic and correct. Is there a certain amount of N1 we shouldn’t exceed? Thanks!
I’ve always tried to stay under 20%. I believe this is what pilots do too but don’t quote me
Yeah I do 15% power when on both engines,
And 25% power when on 1 engine.
That would be 35% and 45% correct? Most N1’s on planes are set to idle at 20% :)

Depends on Aircraft. Some aircraft use less some use more. For example the Tri Jets call for 95-101% N1 88-94% Power
I can only speak about the A320, but some general rules:
- Avoid high thrust settings during taxi if you can (anything higher than 40% N1) unless absolutely necessary. Using excessive thrust may result in foreign object damage to the aircraft and the engines.
- You generally do not need any thrust to get the aircraft moving from a stand-still on a flat surface. The A320 (especially those equipped with IAE engines or the NEOs) can very comfortably roll without using any thrust above IDLE. I believe this is also the case in Infinite Flight. The less thrust you use, the less fuel, the happier your (albeit virtual) employer will be! :)
- Adding to the above, avoid using thrust sparatically. Use only what is necessary and let the aircraft gently accelerate. Reduces wear and tear on the engines and improves passenger comfort (you’re not piloting an F1 car!).
