Personnaly, the discord thing is what fundamentaly make me not go into any VA.

I have found that you get out of the VA what you put into it. In my experience, I was with one and never really found community there. I finally left, and moved to a new one. I reached out pretty quickly to tell them that I wanted to do my part to help make the VA a better place.
A lot of VA’s need good help, and ideas…you can make it a better place for others.

Active staff (>3 atleast) + regional players is key.
By active staff I mean they fly, involve in discussions in the VA and keep bringing new things.

I think it depends on which VAs you’re a part of. Out of SWVA, UPSV, and GAF, Southwest is the least active, but I can still put in flights and they have ROTWs and such. The other two are quite active, and I could easily spend all of my time flying for them if I wanted to!

If a VA organizes events and fly together I don’t think it’s boring, just attending them and fitting in… Sometimes people can get bored and that’s natural, but VAs need to constantly keep themselves updated. Here, both the pilot and the management have a responsibility. If I talk about my own VA experience, I am a CEO and it is nice to be with people, flying together, seeing new places, organizing events and organizing competitions keeps me more vigorous.

It really depends on the VA Indian Virtual was the first VA i was apart of and it was really fun!

I used to run one, trust me. I cannot stand using discord.
it would be a lot more professional if any VA used WhatsApp or other systems but then there is the concern of online safety with giving your phone number to strangers and whatnot

Yes, I agree, something else could be used instead of Discord and it is banned in my country. I can log in under difficult conditions, both because I am IFATC and because I am the CEO of Oman Air. But if I managed this on WhatsApp, I would not be successful, because you can set up a more organized system and server in Discord, but I do not think I will get the same efficiency in WhatsApp.

What’s everyone’s beef with Discord? I’m in a VA and we use it extensively even tho I still don’t know how to use it properly, my broken brain even perceives Infinite Flight’s Discord as one giant clustered maze but I still think Discord had served well as a VA’s comms hub…
Just askin 'cause I’m genuinely clueless, why the hate? 
Should we think of a 3rd party radio idea for Va’s and group flights?

If discord is misused, then yes, it would probably be an unprofessional communication tool. But most VAs use discord very well, and have it set up extremely efficiently. I think about GAF, which has channels for every single wing, of which there are more than 10, as well as every event we do, training, exercises, missions, and general chats as well. It’s a community effort, and when the entire VA is active and participating, a server becomes alive and efficient, fun and entertaining!

Oh come on, discord can’t be that hard to manage right? You have many different channels, server perks, announcement channels, bot commands, all the resources available to you to run your VA comms!
despite my discord being suspended because of smart “people” violating the ToS in some servers

This is why I prefer discord as VA’s primary communication tool, it’s very effective in most cases like events and missions as well as voice communication during training and exercises for military VOs like GAF.

Yeah giving out my phone number would be a massive GDPR (EU data protection law) Issue for me, I’m in WhatsApp groups but I’m not the data controller.
