Boeing withheld information on 737 MAX according to safety experts

The automated stall-prevention system on Boeing 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 models—intended to help cockpit crews avoid mistakenly raising a plane’s nose dangerously high—under unusual conditions can push it down unexpectedly and so strongly that flight crews can’t pull it back up. Such a scenario, Boeing told airlines in a world-wide safety bulletin roughly a week after the accident, can result in a steep dive or crash—even if pilots are manually flying the jetliner and don’t expect flight-control computers to kick in.

Boeing marketed the MAX 8 partly by telling customers it wouldn’t need pilots to undergo additional simulator training beyond that already required for older versions, according to industry and government officials. One high-ranking Boeing official said the company had decided against disclosing more details to cockpit crews due to concerns about inundating average pilots with too much information—and significantly more technical data—than they needed or could digest.



Now that’s just sad. Surely that would have been picked up during the certification process?!

This is very disheartening to hear. 🤦🏼‍♂️. Hopefully it’s a lesson for the future.

How comes that wasn’t noticed during the approval process? It will be interesting to see what NTSB will come up with here.


They need to stop the Max’s before another plane goes down.

Well this isn’t the first time a Boeing aircraft has been certified while having major issues still.

One could think that the FAA has some potential for improvements here. Well, delays cost money. And money seems to be the most important thing these days.

Boeing’s stock has dropped around 2% from it’s prev close due to this news.

What is especially sad is that simple training in this feature might have saved way over a hundred lives (all the pilots would have had to do was work the trim wheel themselves once the plane started descending on its own) - but Boeing’s marketing team seems to have wanted to sell the MAX based on the premise no new training would be needed.

So this way the pilots had no idea what was happening. The autopilot was off, but the plane still went into a nosedive on its own.


C’mon Boeing, you’re better than this! Sure, the pilots are partially at fault because they couldn’t recognize and recover from a stall, but if Boeing advertised that pilots didn’t need additional training they better have working features as simple as a stall prevention system. I definitely have lost respect for Boeing as a whole.

Actually it was not a stall! The plane simply started on its own to nosedive. They were going full speed.

The pilots would have likely recognized a stall - this was different (basically the opposite!). The plane erroneously assumed a stall so was counteracting by sharply pitching down.

To put it in Infinite Flight terms, imagine the trim just on its own suddenly going to 100%. The plane would immediately nosedive, and you would have seconds to figure out a) the problem was the trim and b) the solution was to IMMEDIATELY get the trim back to 50%

Oh so the system was working but it was working too well… This is what happens when we give robots more authority than the pilots.

Edit: this reminds me of that Alaskan MD80 flight which had a broken trim system causing full deflection, making them crash inverted into the ocean

Kinda like when that Qantas A330 almost crashed because the Autopilot though it should do a nose dive 🤔

Which ironically has always been Boeing’s argument against Airbus…you could always have full control of the plane when needed. Not anymore…


This happened before with them. With a different 737 variant believe it or not so it most likely won’t effect them if they fix it quick


I think it will be interesting to see what the FAA and the CAA in the UK will do after this revelation. There’s a very real possibility they could ground all 737 MAX aircraft.
