Boeing Patent the B1 into a gunship

Yes that’s right, Boeing was granted the patent to make the B1 Bomber into a gunship.

U.S. Patent 9,963,231 B2 was awarded on May 8th to Boeing. It depicts a number of cannon configurations that can be stowed in a B-1B’s weapons bays and extended down outside of those bays for use.

This is one I can’t wait to see the finished product. It’s nice to see them use an exsistig aircraft and convert it into something even better. It could have a dual purpose now. Surveillance/recon or bombing missions. Or even both.

Companies often file many patents like this to get ahead of the game. Don’t expect to see anything like this anytime soon.

Very true, Like the missile ship that was talked about years ago.

Interesting concept but probably superseded by the C130 Ghost.

The problem with ground attack from a fast moving airframe is rate of closure and time on target. Even with a side aperture the window of opportunity is slim with a fast moving weapons platform. Hence the C130 is particularly well suited to this type of role. You don’t want to fly past the target and then loop back for another go, by that time you have become the target!

Personally I can’t envisage a scenario, apart from a rapid need to get assets in theater which would indicate poor planning or intelligence, where this aircraft would take precedence over a Ghost.

Just Boeing covering all odds!

Mach 1.25 with Warthog cannons…yup. This is incredibly awesome in my opinion.

MaxSez: @Yuan_Tugo. Great Minds! Tactically sound responce.
Patent extract provided sez “Aircraft” no mention of B-1. Believe B-1 ref an authors stretch. Hell of a fast strike targeting problem for any mover even with satellite/ laser assist. (Consider CEP) Not a revolutionary concept, there are historic precedents. Author pls provide B-1 associated ref other than concept drawing.

@BigBert10. MaxSez: If It ain’t Boeing it ain’t going. How about the Boeing F-15 “Strike Eagle”

I absolutely love this phrase since I was at the Boeing tour in Everett.

I just didn’t know Boeing makes fighting jets. You learn something new everyday! :D
