I would like to request a fully functional and deployable Head-Up Display (HUD) for the Boeing 787 in Infinite Flight.
With the Boeing 787 family currently undergoing development and rework, I believe this is the ideal time to consider adding the HUD as part of the aircraft’s updated flight deck. Rather than adding it later as a separate feature, the HUD could potentially be incorporated into the 787’s cockpit and systems during the current development process.
The Boeing 787 has a distinctive HUD system in real life, and having a properly implemented HUD would further improve the realism, functionality, and immersion of the aircraft.
How I Think It Should Work
Rather than having the HUD permanently visible, I think it would be much more realistic if it could be deployed from its stored position, as it is on the real aircraft.
The HUD could work something like this:
- The HUD is initially stored/retracted above the pilot’s normal field of view.
- A dedicated HUD Deploy/Retract button could be added to the Actions section of the Systems menu.
- Pressing the button would cause the HUD to deploy (animated) from its stored position into the pilot’s viewing position.
- Pressing the button again would cause it to retract (animated) back into its stored position.
What the Functional HUD Could Display
When deployed, the HUD could provide relevant flight information and guidance, including:
- Flight director guidance
- Airspeed
- Altitude
- Heading
- Vertical speed
- Flight-path vector / flight-path information
- ILS localizer and glideslope guidance where applicable
- Autopilot and flight-director modes
- Other relevant flight and approach guidance
Why This Is Needed
The Boeing 787 is equipped with an advanced flight deck, and its HUD is an important part of the aircraft’s real-world cockpit experience.
A functional and deployable HUD would provide another way for pilots to monitor important flight information while keeping their attention outside the cockpit. This could be particularly useful during:
- Takeoff
- Manual flight
- Approach
- Landing
- Low-visibility operations
- ILS approaches
Having essential flight guidance available directly in the pilot’s field of view could improve situational awareness while also making the aircraft feel more authentic.
Why Now?
I believe the current 787 rework makes this the right time to consider the feature.
Since the 787 is already being actively developed and its systems and cockpit are being reworked, this would be an excellent opportunity to consider the HUD as part of that development rather than trying to introduce it later as a separate addition.
If the cockpit, flight-deck systems, animations, and relevant aircraft functionality are already being updated, implementing the HUD during this process could potentially allow it to be designed and integrated properly from the beginning.
I believe that if the HUD can be incorporated into the current development scope without compromising higher-priority work, this is probably the best opportunity to do so.
